The alkali-aggregate reaction is an expanding problem that affects the durability and safety of concrete structures and it is linked to the presence of moisture in concrete but are not yet clear ways of how to stop the reaction and prevent the progress of the expansions. Recent research indicates the use of waterproofing products as a tool in the reduction of available moisture within the concrete and thereby mitigate the reaction after its inception.
