Streptomyces clavuligerus produces important β-lactam compounds such as: holomycin (Hol), pirrotina an important member of the class of antibiotics; cephamycin C (CefC), used as raw material for the production of semi-synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics, applied in the prevention of severe postoperative infections; lastly, clavulanic acid (AC) inhibitor, β-lactamases produced by bacteria resistant to penicillins. The high genetic instability of S. clavuligerus often results in chromosomal deletions of stretches of DNA that are mostly associated with the sporulation capacity and production of secondary metabolites.
