Understanding microstructure-property relations has been the central task in material science for centuries. Modern experimental techniques can characterize microstructures and test properties, while modelling and simulation act as bridges between scales. Computational methods below continuum level (e.g. molecular dynamics and discrete dislocation dynamics) are able to provide detailed information on microstrucutures but are not applicable for collective microstructure evolution or property prediction on engineering scales. On the other hand, macroscopic methods can reproduce engineering properties well, but cannot provide insights into microstructure level mechanisms due to overly phenomenological treatment.
