Bioactive glasses (BG) are attractive materials for biomedical applications, especially for bone regeneration, owing to their unique properties such as bone-bonding ability. Although BG alone can be used for treating bone defects, BG suffer from limitations, such as low fracture toughness, preventing their efficient use. Nanocomposites containing BG thus stand out as promising materials being able to overcome the limitations of using only BG. In this context, bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGN) are considered suitable building blocks for composites in comparison to micron-sized BG, due to their morphological characteristics (e.g. large surface-to-volume ratio) leading to superior nanocomposites, usually with enhanced mechanical properties. ...
