The purpose of this PhD thesis was the synthesis of novel hybrid nano-materials by means of non-covalent chemistry. This task has been accomplished by exfoliating graphite as well as inorganic bulk layered compounds in water or organic solvents and functionalizing these dispersed nano-sheets with the aid of PDI-based derivatives. In order to investigate the mechanism of the functionalization process, it was necessary, first of all, to analyze the behavior of PDI-based dyes in solution. Therefore, in Chapter 1 of this PhD thesis, the aggregation behavior and chelating properties of the first member of a new class of anionic PDI-based bolaamphiphiles has been presented in detail.
