Cyclotron resonance scattering features (CRSFs), or cyclotron lines, are observed as quasi-harmonically spaced absorption lines in the spectra of some accreting X-ray binaries. They exhibit the fundamental micro-physics in strong magnetic fields. Ironically, cyclotron lines can only be observed from a macro-physical point of view, that is, by astronomical observations. Neutron star binary systems provide us with the laboratories necessary to study the behavior of matter in the vicinity of fields of a strength close to the critical magnetic field strength, B_crit = 44.14 * 10^12 G, the realm of which is far from being approached by earth based experiments.
