Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were employed for the surface modification of a variety of metal oxide nanostructures (NSs). This resulted in an remarkable assortment of inorganic-organic (core-shell) hybrid materials. These materials were fabricated, characterized and employed in different concepts. SAMs allowed to incorporate the endless realm of organic chemistry into the less vast territory of inorganic materials. An in depth, step by step analysis of the aspects involved in the process, of going from a pristine inorganic material to an inorganic-organic (core-shell) hybrid material, is described.
