Background: Acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) catalyses the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin into ceramide, which acts as a lipid messenger that regulates important cellular functions. Deregulated ASM activity has been reported for different common diseases, but the mechanisms regulating ASM activity are still debated.
