The work described in this thesis is based on a newly designed method for the synthesis of polyynes. This method relies on the Pd-catalyzed crosscoupling reaction of a terminal acetylene with an 2,2-dibromovinyl triflate. One topic of this thesis describes the elucidation of mechanistic aspects of this method. Another topic of this thesis focuses on the application of the Pd-catalyzed method for polyyne chain extension reactions and for the synthesis of symmetrical substituted odd numbered polyynes.
