Die Einführung der Proteaseinhibitoren in die HIV-Therapie ermöglichte erstmals eine langandauernde Unterdrückung der Viruslast, wodurch die Morbidität und Mortalität HIV-infizierter Patienten drastisch gesenkt werden konnte. Der Erfolg der Therapie wird jedoch durch das Auftreten resistenzassoziierter Mutationen in Frage gestellt. Bei Therapie mit dem Proteaseinhibitor Nelfinavir (NFV) treten abhängig vom HIV-1 Subtyp unterschiedliche Mutationsmuster auf.
