Dinoflagellaten sind photosynthetische Eukaryoten, die Lichtenergie in chemisch stabile Energieformen konvertieren können. Dazu wird die Energie der ankommenden Photonen von Pigment-Protein Komplexen, sog. Antennen, absorbiert und zu Reaktionszentren geleitet, in denen die Energieumwandlung startet. Dinoflagellaten besitzen neben Membran lokalisierten Antennen eine spezielle lösliche Antenne, das Peridinin-Chlorophyll \(\it a\)-Protein, welches den effektiven Absorptionsquerschnitt jedes Reaktionszentrums zusätzlich erhöht.
