Selbstorganisation ist ein vielversprechender Ansatz für die Herstellung von dreidimensionalen photonischen Kristallen. Die Produkte, bekannt als Opale, enthalten jedoch viele Defekte. In dieser Arbeit wurde eine der Herstellungsmethoden für Opale, die Kapillarabscheidungsmethode, verbessert, um Opale mit hoher Qualität zu erhalten. Die Opalstruktur wurde mikroskopisch und mit Streutechniken studiert. Der Prozess der Opalbildung wurde mit UV/Vis-NIR-Spektroskopie untersucht. Das erlaubt die Definition von Opalbildungsschritten mit charakteristischen Wasserumverteilungen und Sinterprozessen.
