A quantum wavefunction can be written as a Fourier series and it is believed the exp(ikx) components represent actual plane wave solutions with different weights. It has been argued in previous notes, that a bound state is a resonance of these plane waves which carry different weight fk. The system cycles through the different states with a frequency E as described by exp(iEt).
