The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is organized into a continuous, net-like system of interconnecting tubules and flattened sacs. When labeled with an ER-specific dye, the dynamics of these tubules are visible as they extend and retract throughout the cytoplasm. Migrating fish epidermal cells are a good cell type for observing ER movements, because the cells are so thin. The fluorescent lipid DiOC6 was used to stain the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria of migrating cultured fish epidermal cells. As the cells migrate, the movements of these organelles can be seen.
