Herein, we describe a novel strategy for synthesizing a chiral intermediate of (+)-catharanthine via phosphoric acid-catalyzed asymmetric desymmetrization of a meso-isoquinuclidine possessing a 1,3-diol unit that was synthesized by a formal amide insertion reaction
