This thesis examines the prerequisites for a durable private sector investment policy for exotic softwood plantations and their management. Pinus radiata is used as a case study as it comprises about 80% of the Australian softwood plantation area, but the principles are generic for industrial plantations. The issue is topical as plantation areas have declined in recent years and significant expansion is needed to satisfy domestic demand. Issues canvased in this thesis include the challenges of long rotations, the costs of suitable land, and the possibility of a market for immature plantations.
