One of the most important Aboriginal people of her generation was Oodgeroo of the Noonuccal Tribe, Custodian of the Land Minjerriba. In the 1960s and 1970s, as Kath Walker, she became a legendary force in Australian poetry. News of her death in September 1993, at seventy-two years, was broadcast throughout the world. Despite the continuing significance of her poetry and prose, she was always far more than a writer.
