DEVELOPING SUPPLEMENTARY LISTENING MATERIAL BY USING TEXT TO SPEECH AND WAVEPAD SOUND FOR 8th GRADE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Listening plays an important role in language learning, therefore it is important to provide students with appropriate listening input. Indonesia current curriculum provides students and teachers with English textbook which is used as the input for language learning process including listening. Since the textbook is used as the listening input, it is important to find out the quality of the existing listening material in the textbook. In order to find out the quality of the existing listening material, observation, distributing questionnaire, and conducting interview were done by the researcher. It is found that there are several weaknesses related to the existing listening material and these weaknesses cannot help students improve their listening skill, besides the existing listening material does not meet students’ need. Due to the weaknesses of the existing listening material, it is important to provide students with supplementary listening material which can meet their need and improve their listening skill. Therefore, the researcher is interested in developing a supplementary native-like listening material as the solution for the weaknesses of the existing listening material. The design of the research is research and development. After finishing the product, the researcher took the product to the experts for experts’ judgment. When the product was considered good by the expert, the researcher took the product to try it out. After the series of try out, it shows that the developed product is feasible for teacher to teach, for students to study, and for developing indicators of listening
