IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL BY IMPLEMENTING STUDENT TEAMS ACHIEVEMENT DIVISION (STAD) (A Classroom Action Research at the Eleventh Grade of SMK N 1 Magelangin the Academic Year of 2016/ 2017)

This research was conducted to know whether Student Teams Achievement Division can improve students’ speaking skill andto identify the classroom situation when STAD was implemented in speaking class. This research is an action research which was conducted in two cycles at the eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 1 Magelang from August to September 2016. It consisted of four steps: planning, implementing, observation, and reflection. The research data were collected by using observation, interview, questionnaire, and test (pre-test and post-test). The technique of analyzing qualitative data used five steps by McKernan in Burns (1999: 156-160) which include: assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile the quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test. The research findings showed that: (1) the implementation of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) could improve students’ speaking skill, in terms of improving students’ accuracy and fluency. The mean score of speaking test increased from 61.64 in pre-test, 68.98 in test 1, and in post-test became 78.53. (2) STAD could improve classroom situation, in the term of: (a) improving the classroom atmosphere in which the class wasmore alive because of students’ participation,(b) improving students’ motivation and interest, (c) improving students’ empathy to their friends in learning. From the result above, it could be concluded that Student Teams Achievement Division is an alternative teaching method that benefits both for students’ achievement and learning process.
