the effectiveness of contextual teaching and learning to teach speaking

The Objectives of this research are: (1) to find out whether contextual teaching and learning is more effective than audio-lingual method to teach speaking; (2) to find out whether the students having high learning interest have better speaking skill than those having low learning interest; (3) to find out whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ learning interest in the students’ speaking skill. This experimental research was carried out in the vocational school from July to August 2016. The number of population was four classes (110 students) that consisted of eight grade A,B,C, and D. The samples were the eleventh grade A as the experimental group and B as the control group. Each group consisted of 30 students. The experimental group was treated by using Contextual Teaching and Learning, while the control group was treated by using Audio-Lingual Method. The data collection technique used questionnaire and speaking test and data analysis technique used statistic descriptive and inferential.The data analysis shows the following findings: (1) Contextual Teaching and Learning is more influental than Audio-Lingual Method in the students’ speaking skill; (2) The students having high learning interest have better speaking skill than those having low learning interest; and (3) There is an interaction between taching methods and students learning interest in the students’ speaking skill.
