KONSTRUKSI IDENTITAS MELALUI MEDIA SOSIAL (Studi Fenomenologi Terkait Konstruksi Identitas Media Sosial Terhadap Mahasiswa Pengguna Media Sosial di Surakarta)

D0312064. 2016 Construction of Identity Through Social Media (Phenomenological Study Related to Construction of Identity in College Students Through Social Media Users In Surakarta) Thesis. This study aimed to describe the construction of identities through social media that occur among college students in Surakarta. The theory that used in analyzing the phenomenon of identity construction proposed by Richard Jenkins and Drajat Tri Kartono. The method that used in this study is using a phenomenological study. Data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation. Informant selection techniques using purposive sampling. To test the validity of the data that has been collected, the researchers used data triangulation technique. In analyzing the data, researchers used three flow of activities, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions or verification. From this research, the result that social media is the media now in use not only to interact but also to construct identities for its users. Social media is the media that can be used to construct identity through public image. Social media which is selected as an effort to construct identity is Instagram and Path. As an effort to construct an identity, each individual will select the media that can be used in constructing identity. The symbol in social media Instagram and Path are also used as an effort to construct an identity. After select the media and the symbols , an identity will begin to be constructed. The results of constructing an identity can obtain the prestige or as a form of identity compared to other identities. Prestige is also closely related to a form of resistance from people who feel that the identity is being bothered. Identity can also obtain a difference from one identity to another identity. This is a form of demarcation. However, sometimes in the effort to construct an identity, the individual concerned about the existence of an agreement or harmony between what he wants to show through social media with the meaning of from others.
