ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine (1) the difference between the short story writing skills of students who were are taught using SAVI approach and Expository approach; (2) the difference between the short story writing skills of students with high achievement motivation and the students with low achievement motivation; (3) the interaction between SAVI approach and achievement motivation on short story writing skills. The method used was a 2x2 factorial design experiment. The study population was all students of SMA Negeri in Kebumen district; samples were 50 students of SMA Negeri 1 Buluspesantren and SMA Negeri 1 Mirit by using purposive sampling technique. Data collection techniques used were tests and questionnaires. The test was used to retrieve short story writing skills data; the questionnaire was used to collect student achievement motivation data. Test validity of the short story writing skills test was using conceptual validity. Test validity of the achievement motivation questionnaire statement was using product moment correlation formula. Test reliability of the short story writing skill was using rating test reliability technique, while test reliability of achievement motivation questionnaire statement was using koefisien α cronbach. Test normality was using lillifors test, while homogeneity test was using bartllett test. Experimental data was analyzed by using Two-way Analysis of Variance (Two-way ANOVA). Based on the data analysis, it was concluded, first, short story writing skills taught using SAVI approach was better than a short story writing skills taught using expository approach. This was seen in the results of Fh of 60.185 > Ft of 4.052 with db numerator of 1 and db denominator of 46 at significant level α = 0.05. Second, short story writing skills of students with high achievement motivation was better than the short story writing skills of students with low achievement motivation. This was seen in the result of Fh of 29.292 > Ft of 4.052 with db numerator of 1 and db denominator of 46 at significant level α = 0.05. Third, there was interaction between learning approach and achievement motivation influencing short story writing skills. This was seen in the results of Fh of 5.712 > Ft of 4.052 with db numerator of 1 and db denominator of 46 at significant level α = 0.05. Keywords: writing, approach , SAVI, expository, motivation
