For biomedical research, adequate model organisms are of vital importance. For the investigation of the visual system, zebrafish have proven to be of outstanding value. Although they do not belong to the mammalian class, their cone-dominated retina, in combination with the extracorporal, rapid development of the transparent embryos, the large number of offspring and the short generation time represents a major advantage over the widely used mouse model. A basic requirement for the identification and characterization of subjects with visual defects are robust behavioral tests.
