The cuprates constitute a fascinating class of material that hosts many physical phenomena not encountered in other solids. The most prominent feature is perhaps the transition to a superconducting state at a comparatively high temperature Tc, even exceeding 135 K in some compounds. Furthermore, a so-called pseudogap phase has been discovered, which is a peculiar state of the electronic system, associated with a partial gap in the electronic excitation spectrum. The superconducting energy gap and the pseudogap both open at the Fermi energy, but the pseudogap can appear already at temperatures substantially higher than Tc.
