Dunkle Materie kommt im Universum rund acht mal häufiger vor als gewöhnliche Materie, etwa die uns bekannten Protonen, Neutronen und Elektronen. Woraus diese dunkle Materie besteht, ist aber noch weit gehend unbekannt. Man weiss auch noch nicht, wie eine Scheibengalaxie - z. B. die Milchstrasse - in einem Universum mit dunkler Materie überhaupt entsteht. Wir haben die Entstehung von Scheibengalaxien auf einem Supercomputers mittels Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics / N - Körper Simulationen berechnet. Diese Untersuchungen stellen dabei die genausten Simulationen von Galaxienentstehung dar, die bisher weltweit durchgeführt wurden.
