In Germany every year approximately 2.200 children under the age of 14 come down with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). While parents manage diabetes for infants, children take over some tasks over time. During the transition from childhood to adolescence, between 8 - 13 years of age, children become more independent. Children with T1DM experience an additional transition in diabetes management. So far, however, research focused on the transition from adolescence to adulthood.; With the study, experiences of adolescents with T1DM and their mothers with the transition from childhood to adolescence and the meaning of independence were explored.; This interpretive phenomenological study was conducted in two diabetes walk-in clinics in the south...
