The impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy in improving glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients and its possible impact on blood lipid.

Introduction: Periodontal disease is one of the infectious diseases associated with common inflammation among ‎people with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy in improving glycemic control in type 2 ‎diabetic patients and its possible impact on blood lipid.‎ ‎ Materials and Methods: This study was an interventional study and was conducted as an observation and examination and ‎recorded in the information form was done, The ethical issues of this research were approved and ‎approved by the Regional Ethics Committee in the medical researches of Ardabil University of ‎Medical Sciences. In this study, 80 patients who were admitted to the diabetes clinic of Imam ‎Khomeini Hospital in Ardebil were randomly studied. Of these, half the control group and the other ‎half were examined in the experimental group, from these patients (control and test groups), FBS, ‎HbA1C, TG, TC, CBC. diff, ESR were measured at different time intervals, and then under ‎examination PI, BOP, CAL, PD, GI. And then with non-surgical periodontal treatment, the effect on ‎the metabolic tests mentioned was studied. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20 ‎using Wilcoxon test and dependent t-test. Results: The results of the study showed that non-‎surgical periodontal treatment reduced (GI, PI, PD, ‎CAL, BOP) and hemoglobin A1C (P≤0.05). ‎However, non-surgical periodontal treatment had no ‎effect on blood lipid profile (TCh, TG) and ESR ‎and CBC.diff before and 3 months later ‎‎(P≥0.05). ‎ Conclusion: In order to improve metabolic control in diabetics, it is necessary to treat and remove their ‎periodontal disease.
