Lived Experience in obese women: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study

Introduction: Overweight and obesity is one of the most common health problems and a risk factor for many diseases. In addition to increase the rate of obesity in the population, the proportion of obese women is also enhanced compared to obese men. This study was conducted with the aim of to explore the lived experiences of obese women. Methods: Ahermeneutic phenomenological approach was usedin this study. Fourteen women with the body mass index of over 34 were interviewedby semi-structural method. The interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatimafter obtaining consent from the participants.vanManen method was used for all steps of study including data collections, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting the findings. Data analysis was performed by using MAXQDA softwarever. 10 and emerged the fundamental themes and pattern. Results:658 primary codes obtained from obese women experiences;the main theme of"Self-indulgence and passivity" was emerged. This theme included of “disability", "shameful and annoying looks", and "despising" subthemes. Conclusion:This hermeneutics phenomenologystudy showed that the obese women are avulnerable group, and need to receive special care and education. Healthprovidersmust be aware from the attitudes and behavior of this group of patients and not only avoidfrom their blaming and annoyingbehaviors but also accompanying to solve their problems and promote their life quality
