Increased world population, greater pressure on the environment, increased use of land resources globally and increased demand for nutrients and non-renewable energy are predicted for coming decades. Livestock production accounts for 70% of all agricultural land use and, as the global demand for livestock products is expected to almost double by 2050, innovative production solutions are needed.
