The aesthetics in the art of word of the church: with a reference to the hymnological work of St. John Damascenus

This dissertation treats the problems of Aesthetics from an orthodox theological and ecclesiastical perspective. There is not an approach of the perception and materiality, time and space, but of whole teaching of the Orthodox Church about the creaturality of universe and the possibility of deification of man. The Word-Logos of God is present in every word and the man, through the Word and through the every word, can reach the zenith of his existence. This is about a Theological Aesthetics and Ascetism which was for centuries in the use of the Orthodox Church as latreia and pray, sacred music and poetry, scil. hymnography. This art and techne gives the possibility of the restoration of the mankind and make possible the real beautification of the human person in a real cultural way. Nevertheless, in this context the very aesthetical object remains the holiness (see the case of biographical texts on st. John’s life).Η εργασία αναφέρεται στο φιλοσοφικό υπόβαθρο του θεολογικού έργου του ιερού Μελωδού σε σύγκριση και σύνδεση πάντα με κάποιες αντιπροσωπευτικές απόψεις της αρχαιότητας και της νεοτέρας περιόδου. Αυτή η αντιπαράθεση ιδεών και αντιλήψεων πραγματοποιείται σε τέσσερα διαφορετικά κεφάλαια (που αποτελούν τα πρώτα δύο μέρη της) όπου αναπτύσσονται κατά σειρά οι έννοιες της Αισθητικής και του Ωραίου από την άποψη τόσο της αρχαίας ελληνικής και μοντέρνας σκέψης, όσο και από την προοπτική των μη υμνολογικών έργων του αγίου Ιωάννου του Δαμασκηνού. Η εκμετάλλευση των αισθητικών θεωριών της αρχαιότητας επιμένει κυρίως πάνω στις θεωρίες του Πλάτωνα και του Αριστοτέλη δεδομένου ότι η αξιοποίησή τους στο Βυζάντιο και εννοείται στο γραμματολογικό έργο του Αγίου Ιωάννου είναι "αισθητή" (ειδικά στο χώρο των φιλοσοφικών κατηγοριών και της συγγένειας πλατωνικής ιδέας και δαμασκήνειας εικόνας)
