Nanoindentation is an experimental technique used to determine mechanical properties and to probe mechanical behavior of structures and materials in lengths ranging from micrometers even to some nanometers. Through nanoindentation loading-unloading curves, modulus of elasticity, hardness, yielding, residual stresses and toughness of samples can be extracted. From theoretical perspective nanoindentation applications are included in the broader field of contact mechanics. In particular, those elements that give the necessary documentation to extract mechanical properties from nanoindentation experiments (loading-unloading curves) are taken from contact mechanics, theories of elasticity, plasticity and generalized theories of continuum media. ...
