Χωρο-χρονικά πρότυπα της ιχθυοπανίδας ενός Μεσογειακού ποταμού διακοπτόμενης ροής

Freshwater fish species are amongst the most highly threatened species around the globe. Freshwater fish inhabiting stream and rivers around the Mediterranean basin are predominantly threatened, due to their restricted distributional ranges and elevated anthropogenic pressures. Specifically, in the last updates of the worldwide IUCN Red List, freshwater fish species are amongst the most highly threatened species, registering alarming percentages: 37% worldwide, and 56% when only the Mediterranean endemic species are considered. Decelerating this dramatic biodiversity loss is still possible through intensified, coordinated conservation efforts, however, a deeper knowledge of biodiversity patterns and the factors affecting this biodiversity change is urgently needed. The current dissertation aims to advance the knowledge of fish population and fish assemblage dynamics in a Mediterranean intermittent river. Specifically, the study was designed to identify the distributional and structural patterns of an endemic and endangered fish assemblage on multiple spatiotemporal scales and to evaluate the role of environmental factors affecting these patterns. The entire study was conducted during the period of 2010-20161 at the Evrotas River, a Mediterranean-type river located in Southern Greece. Overall, six separate research activities were conducted in order to:i) describe the ichthyofaunal assemblage compositions and distributions along the longitudinal river gradient and attempt to interpret fish assemblage types in a hydrologically disturbed Mediterranean intermittent riverii) identify the early summer habitat use (i.e. prior to the launch of the drought period) of the three endemic cyprinids in reference sites, in order to set the baseline for future conservation actionsiii) identify and compare the habitat use patterns by the three endemic fish species in reference and pollution impacted sites, in order to test how intermittency and pollution could affect in combination local fish assemblagesiv) assess how fish assemblage and population attributes (species composition, density, abundance, size structure and mortality) of the three endangered cyprinids are affected by the drying process at the reach and habitat scale and how the recolonization process evolves after flow resumptionv) attempt to elucidate the fish metacommunity patterns observed in the study area, and if spatial or local scales are responsible for these patternsvi) identify methodological drawbacks for assessing fish population status in intermittent streams.In the Evrotas main corridor, we observed a general trend over a three year period, with an increase of fish density and species richness along an upstream–downstream gradient. Fish assemblages from upstream to downstream were characterized by a decrease of the most rheophilic species (Squalius keadicus) and an increase of the most stagnophilic species (Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus). Three river segments characterized by a high degree of homogeneity were delineated. Habitat and environmental preferences for the studied fish species were identified, with elevation and water velocity being the most important environmental factors affecting fish distribution patterns. The current study provides evidence that, even in an intermittent river, an assemblage pattern following a longitudinal gradient can be identified, mainly due to the lack of instream barriers in the case of the Evrotas River, allowing recolonization after flow resumption.Moreover, the early summer habitat use (i.e. prior to the launch of the drought period) of the three endemic and endangered Greek cyprinids, the Evrotas chub (Squalius keadicus), the Spartian minnowroach (Tropidophoxinellus spartiaticus) and the Evrotas minnow (Pelasgus laconicus), in terms of depth, water velocity, substrate and macrophyte cover were delineated in two reference sites. In the case of the chub, habitat use by juvenile and adult fish was assessed separately. All three target species had their highest densities in deeper habitats with low water velocities and depositional substrata, such as pools and runs. A high overlap in habitat use was evident for the three species. Μinnowroaches, minnows and large chubs actively selected deep habitats. Minnowroaches and minnows favored slow flowing, vegetated habitats with fine substrate located close to the river bank, whereas chubs had no clear affinity for particular velocities or substrate types. However, size class comparisons in chub indicated differences in both water depth and velocity. Overall, the results of this study provides the first detailed report of habitat use by these endangered fish species.When assessing the habitat use of the three endemic cyprinids at a reference reach and at a reach impacted mainly by pollution, differences in habitat use were indicated. Fish distributions and densities indicated that depth and flow were the most relevant factors in habitat use by the three species. More specifically, in the reference reach, habitat use reflected the differences between the more generalist (capable of occupying equally fast and slow flowing habitats) Evrotas chub and the other two limnophylic species, Spartian minnowroach and the Evrotas minnow. In the impacted reach, Evrotas chub indicated a tendency to abandon lentic habitats (pools and glides), concentrating mostly in fast flowing habitats (runs and riffles). This shift of Evrotas chub away from the slower flowing pools and glides to runs, is possibly related to the disturbance of this reach. The Spartian minnowroach and the Evrotas minnow were positively associated with depth and negatively with flow at both reaches. Overall, the differences observed in the abiotic and habitat parameters between the two reaches during this study hamper the possibility to actually identify the cause-effect relationship of how the effluents of the wastewater treatment plant of Sparta affects the fish assemblages and the habitat use of the three cyprinids of Evrotas River, due to the fact, that these observed differences, may actual reflect other factors (e.g. spatial factors). Thus, the tentatively suggested shifts in habitat use by the Evrotas cyprinids requires further investigation in order to clarify whether these shifts can be attributed to the impact of pollution and /or the impact of other factors.When assessing fish community attributes’ variation (abundance, density, and size-structure of the three endemic cyprinids), during the drying and the recolonization processes, both at the reach and habitat scale, we observed that the progressive environmental deterioration, led initially to the confinement of the three species to the deepest habitats. The two smaller, limnophylic species, the Spartian Minnowroach and the Evrotas Minnow, exhibited higher resistance, attributed to their life-history strategies, while the larger, habitat generalist Evrotas Chub, presented lower resistance and high mortality rates, already at the onset of drought. Upon flow resumption, fish rapidly recolonized the affected area, a sign of high resilience of all species.Furthermore, we investigated the compositional structure of fish assemblages along the longitudinal axis of the Evrotas River attempting to unravel whether species sorting and/or dispersal processes shape metacommunities. Our analysis that explored community similarity with geographical distance indicated a high correlated distance decay relationship. When using community similarity with environmental conditions, in contrast, there was no significant correlation, leading to the conclusion that the degree of similarities of nearby sites (regardless of their intermittent or perennial status) were not significantly affected by environmental conditions. Nearby perennial and intermittent sites displayed similar fish communities mainly contributed to dispersal rather than similar local environmental conditions, while, in addition, a gradual species turnover was evident along the longitudinal axis, with chub dominance in the upstream reaches being replaced by minnowroach dominance in the lower reaches. Thus, we conclude that our results provide support for the dispersal mass effects hypothesis rather than the species sorting hypothesis, with mass effects most likely dominating summer metacommunity dynamics in the Evrotas River. The limited temporal scale of our study, however, does not allow us to derive safe conclusions about the progress of metacommunity mechanisms.Finally, we evaluated whether sampling density, as well as other population attributes, is concordant to estimate population size during drought years. Our findings suggest that the shrinkage of the wetted area is much higher than the decrease of “segment” population size, and local densities increase, despite the substantial reduction of absolute abundance. We suggest that when river drying is a recurring condition, the results of site-based surveys should be interpreted with caution, as local fish densities may provide a misleading indication of population status and result to unrealistic inferences for population or ecosystem integrity. Less variable site features (mean base flow width / mean active channel width) and/or initial site characteristics (initial wetted width) should instead be used to estimate local densities, in order to minimize errors associated with water contraction and crowding effects. Similarly to density, other quality metrics (e.g. abundance, biomass, size structure and richness) can potentially be affected by crowding effects during seasonal drying.Overall, it was evident that the high spatial and temporal variability of all environmental parameters of Evrotas River is the basic component that affects the structure and function of its freshwater fish. Under these variable conditions, any research effort aiming either to interpret / define ecological patterns or to diagnose the ecological integrity of such ecosystems, presents several difficulties in drawing out safe conclusions following the classic ecological approaches. The underlying cause of the failure of the classical methodological approaches is mainly attributed due to the constantly changing environmental conditions that do not allow a clear cause / effect relationship on several occasions.In a more general context, the present study recognized these difficulties and attempted to explore the ecological patterns and ecological processes of the fish faunaof Evrotas River using also macroecological approaches. During this study, it was observed that the recovery and ultimately the survival of the endemic fish of Evrotas is mainly attributed to a biological factor (high fertility) as well as to an ecological mechanism (dispersion during the re-establishment of flow). From a conservational point of view, these two factors are crucial to the survivorship of the unique and highly threatened endemics of the Evrotas River. In addition, efforts should be focused in maintaining population connectivity to support depleted populations through the removal of barriers (e.g. dams, weirs, road crossings, etc.) that disrupt longitudinal connectivity, and thus increasing the possibility of survival and/or recolonization.Τα ποτάμια και τα ρέματα διακοπτόμενης ροής παρουσιάζουν έναν επαναλαμβανόμενο, εποχιακό κατακερματισμό των ενδιαιτημάτων τους (Larned et al., 2010; Lake, 2011). Αυτό το υδρολογικό πρότυπο, με τη σύνδεση και αποσύνδεση της επιφάνειας του νερού, καθορίζει τις μορφές ζωής, τους κύκλους ζωής, καθώς και τις οικολογικές διεργασίες των υδρόβιων οργανισμών που διαβιούν σε αυτά τα οικοσυστήματα (Blondel & Aronson 1999; Gasith & Resh, 1999). Οι υδρόβιοι οργανισμοί που διαβιούν σε αντίστοιχα ποτάμια και ρέματα διακοπτόμενης ροής, αναγκάζονται σε εποχιακή βάση, να επιβιώσουν κάτω από αντίξοες περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες για μεγάλα χρονικά διαστήματα. Επιπροσθέτως, περιορίζονται σε συρρικνωμένα ενδιαιτήματα με μόνο μερικές ενδιάμεσες «καλές υδρολογικές περιόδους συνήθως την άνοιξη» – μιας εποχής με ιδιαίτερη ζωτική σημασία για την ανάκαμψη των πληθυσμών μέσω της διαδικασίας της αναπαραγωγής και της διασποράς νεαρών ατόμων. Σε αυτά τα ετερογενή και εξαιρετικά ασταθή οικοσυστήματα, πολλοί υδρόβιοι οργανισμοί έχουν αναπτύξει κατάλληλους μηχανισμούς επιβίωσης που τους επιτρέπουν να προσαρμόζονται στις έντονες περιβαλλοντικές αλλαγές (Matthews, 1987; Poff, 1997; Dodds et al., 2004). Αντίθετα εκείνοι οι οργανισμοί με χαμηλή ικανότητα αντοχής στις σκληρές περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες έχουν ήδη εξαφανιστεί ή θα εξαφανιστούν στο άμεσο μέλλον. Η δομή των ιχθυοκοινοτήτων σε ποτάμια και ρέματα διαλείπουσας ροής εξαρτάται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από τα οικολογικά χαρακτηριστικά των ειδών, τις μεταξύ τους αλληλεπιδράσεις καθώς και από τις τοπικές περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες, αλλά και από τους περιφερειακούς παράγοντες που διαδραματίζονται σε μεγαλύτερη κλίμακα (π.χ. κλιματικές συνθήκες, εμπόδια για την διασπορά των ειδών κ.α.). Ο εποχιακός κατακερματισμός των ποταμών και των ρεμάτων διαλείπουσας ροής, δημιουργεί απομονωμένες περιοχές όπου κάποιες θα αποτελέσουν τις «πηγές - source areas» αφού από αυτές θα προέλθουν τα πρώτα άτομα που θα επανεποικίσουν μια περιοχή μετά την ξηρασία, ενώ κάποιες άλλες θα αποτελέσουν τις περιοχές όπου τα είδη θα εξαφανίζονται επανειλημμένα κατά τη διάρκεια των περιόδων ξηρασίας (sink areas). Κατά την διάρκεια όπου αποκαθίσταται η βασική απορροή των ποταμών (συνήθως την άνοιξη για τα Μεσογειακά ποτάμια), οι συναθροίσεις των ειδών στις περιοχές όπου τα είδη εξαφανίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια των περιόδων ξηρασίας (sink areas), θα πρέπει ιδανικά να ανακάμψουν σε παρόμοια επίπεδα προ-διαταραχής (Magalhães et al., 2007; Matthews et al., 2013), υποδεικνύοντας παρόμοια χαρακτηριστικά με κοντινές περιοχές που αποτελέσαν πηγές. Ωστόσο, οι χωρο-χρονικές μεταβολές της αφθονίας και της σύνθεσης των ψαριών που διαβιούν σε ποτάμια διακοπτόμενης ροής εξακολουθούν να μην έχουν αποσαφηνιστεί επαρκώς και απαιτείται περαιτέρω έρευνα. Τα φαινόμενα ξηρασίας μεταβάλουν σημαντικά τη χρήση των ενδιαιτημάτων των ψαριών των εσωτερικών υδάτων. Με την πρόοδο της ξηρασίας, αναγκαστικά τα ψάρια περιορίζονται στα εναπομείναντα ενδιαιτήματα που έχουν συνήθως λιμναία χαρακτηριστικά και ονομάζονται καταφύγια (refugia). Εκεί, είτε τα ψάρια αναγκαστικά παραμένουν έως ότου να περάσει το φαινόμενο της ξηρασίας καταφέρνοντας με αυτό τον τρόπο να επιβιώσουν, είτε τα καταφύγια αυτά ξεραίνονται εντελώς και τα ψάρια τελικώς πεθαίνουν (Matthews, 1998). Εντός αυτών των καταφυγίων, οι βιοτικές αλληλεπιδράσεις που λαμβάνουν χώρα έχουν ως αποτέλεσμα τον αυξημένο τροφικό ανταγωνισμό και την θήρευση από υδάτινους και ιπτάμενους θηρευτές, εξαιτίας του έντονου συνωστισμού που κυριαρχεί (Tramer, 1977; Boulton & Lake, 1992; Matthews & Marsh-Matthews, 2003). Επιπλέον, σε αυτές τις λιμναίες συνθήκες, οι περιβαλλοντικές παράμετροι μεταβάλλονται έντονα σε ημερήσια βάση, με αφενός υψηλές θερμοκρασίες κατά την διάρκεια της ημέρας και αφετέρου χαμηλά επίπεδα οξυγόνου κατά την διάρκεια της νύχτας, προκαλώντας έντονο φυσιολογικό στρες στα ψάρια, το οποίο μπορεί να τα οδηγήσει σε θάνατο (Lake, 2003; Magoulick & Kobza, 2003). Επίσης, κατά τη διάρκεια των χαμηλών ροών, το δυναμικό αραίωσης των ρύπων μειώνεται σημαντικά, με αποτέλεσμα να επιδεινώνεται περαιτέρω η ποιότητα των υδάτων (Gasith & Resh, 1999). Εντούτοις, τα ψάρια που βρίσκουν καταφύγιο σε τμήματα μόνιμης ροής, έχουν μεγαλύτερες πιθανότητες επιβίωσης από εκείνα σε γειτονικές περιοχές όπου ξεραίνονται με ταχύ ρυθμό (Magoulick & Kobza, 2003). Ως εκ τούτου, τα καταφύγια κατά την καλοκαιρινή αποξήρανση είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για τη διατήρηση των πληθυσμών των ψαριών, μέσω των οποίων θα επέλθει και ο επανεποικισμός του ποταμού κατά την υδρολογική επανασύνδεση. Τα ψάρια αρχίζουν να επανεποικίζουν τις αποξηραμένες περιοχές μέσω παθητικής ή / και ενεργητικής διασποράς (Detenbeck et al., 1992; Magoulick & Kobza, 2003; Davey & Kelly, 2007). Η επανεποίκιση πραγματοποιείται από κοντινές περιοχές που διατήρησαν νερό κατά την προηγουμένη ξηρασία και αποτελεί σημαντικό παράγοντα για την ανάκαμψη και επιβίωση των ιχθυοπληθυσμών. Ο ρυθμός της ανάκαμψης (δηλ. η ικανότητα των πληθυσμών να επιστρέφουν στις αρχικές –μη διαταραγμένες– συνθήκες), είναι συνάρτηση διάφορων παραγόντων, όπως ο αριθμός και η ποιότητα των καταφυγίων η απόσταση μεταξύ της περιοχής που ξεράθηκε και της περιοχής που προσφέρει τους εποικιστές, τυχόν εμπόδια που επηρεάζουν τη διαμήκη συνεκτικότητα, καθώς και τις συνθήκες και την διαθεσιμότητα των ενδιαιτημάτων στις αποξηραμένες περιοχές (Detenbeck et al., 1992; Davey & Kelly 2007). Επιπρόσθετα, ο ρυθμός ανάκαμψης μπορεί να διαφέρει μεταξύ των ειδών, είτε ανάλογα με την μεταναστευτική συμπεριφορά του κάθε είδους είτε τα χαρακτηριστικά της στρατηγικής-ζωής, όπως το μέγεθος του σώματος, τον χρόνο και τη διάρκεια της αναπαραγωγικής περιόδου, την αναπαραγωγική ηλικία καθώς και την αναπαραγωγική προσπάθεια (Davey & Kelly, 2007). Ο εντοπισμός των διαδικασιών επανεποικισμού και ανάκαμψης των διαφόρων ειδών ψαριών σε ποτάμια διαλείπουσας ροής έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία, καθώς μπορεί να βοηθήσει στην εκπόνηση κατάλληλων διαχειριστικών μέτρων για την προστασία των ειδών, ιδίως κατά την καλοκαιρινή περίοδο. Σύμφωνα με διάφορα μελλοντικά κλιματικά σενάρια, είναι πιθανόν οι περιοχές με μεσογειακό κλίμα να τείνουν να εμφανίζουν πιο συχνά και παρατεταμένα φαινόμενα ξηρασίας, τα οποία ενδέχεται να μειώσουν τις πιθανότητες επιβίωσης των αυτόχθονων ιχθυοπληθυσμών (Hermoso & Clavero, 2011). Υπό αυτές τις συνθήκες, απαιτείται μια ολοκληρωμένη γνώση της δυναμικής των ιχθυοπληθυσμών που εντοπίζονται σε μεσογειακά ποτάμια, προκειμένου να σχεδιαστούν αποτελεσματικές δράσεις διατήρησης και διαχείρισης των ειδών. Απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση είναι η ανάπτυξη της γνώσης, ιδιαίτερα της ελληνικής ιχθυοπανίδας των εσωτερικών υδάτων, δεδομένου ότι ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό (39%, 53 είδη) των ειδών ψαριών γλυκού νερού της Ελλάδας είναι σπάνια, απειλούμενα, ενδημικά είδη (Legakis & Maragou, 2009; Barbieri et al., 2015). Επιπλέον, η συντριπτική πλειονότητα των ποταμών και των ρεμάτων της ελληνικής επικράτειας παρουσιάζουν διακοπτόμενη επιφανειακή ροή (Skoulikidis et al., 2017) και είναι πιθανό να επηρεαστούν ιδιαιτέρως από τις προβλέψεις για την κλιματική αλλαγή. Η παρούσα διατριβή στοχεύει στην προώθηση της γνώσης των ιχθυοπληθυσμών σε ένα αντίστοιχο μεσογειακό ποτάμι διακοπτόμενης ροής. Συγκεκριμένα, η εκπόνηση της έρευνας στα πλαίσια της παρούσης διατριβής σχεδιάστηκε έτσι ώστε να προσδιορίσει την κατανομή των ψαριών και τα δομικά πρότυπα τους σε πολλαπλές χωρο-χρονικές κλίμακες καθώς και να αξιολογήσει το ρόλο των περιβαλλοντικών παραγόντων στη διαμόρφωση αυτών των προτύπων. Η ερευνητική δραστηριότητα έλαβε χώρα στον ποταμό Ευρώτα, ο οποίος επιλέχθηκε με βάση την μοναδική ιχθυοπανίδα του, η οποία συμπεριλαμβάνει ένα τρωτό και δύο κινδυνεύοντα είδη ψαριών, τα οποία χρήζουν άμεσης έμπρακτης προστασίας. Συνολικά, οι στόχοι της παρούσας έρευνας ήταν: i) η περιγραφή της σύνθεσης και της κατανομής της ιχθυοπανίδας κατά μήκος του ποταμού και ο καθορισμός των τμημάτων του με ιχθυολογική ομοιογένεια, ii) ο προσδιορισμός της χρήσης των ενδιαιτημάτων των τριών ενδημικών κυπρινοειδών, πριν την έναρξη της ξηρασίας σε αδιατάρακτες περιοχές του ποταμού, προκειμένου να χρησιμοποιηθούν ως βάση για μελλοντικές δράσεις διατήρησης, iii) η σύγκριση των προτύπων χρήσης των ενδιαιτημάτων των τριών ενδημικών ψαριών σε αδιατάρακτα και διαταραγμένα τμήματα του ποταμού επηρεασμένα από ρύπανση, προκειμένου να ελεγχθεί πώς η μείωση των υδάτων σε συνδυασμό με την ρύπανση επιδρούν στις τοπικές ιχθυοκοινότητες, iv) η εκτίμηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο η διαδικασία της αποξήρανσης επηρεάζει τα πληθυσμιακά χαρακτηριστικά (σύνθεση, πυκνότητα, αφθονία, κλάσεις μεγεθών και θνησιμότητα) των τριών ενδημικών ειδών και να εξεταστεί πως πραγματοποιείται ο επανεποικισμός μετά την ανάκτηση της επιφανειακής ροής, v) ο εντοπισμός των προτύπων των μετακοινοτήτων (metacommunity patterns) της ιχθυοπανίδας στην περιοχή μελέτης και τέλος vi) ο προσδιορισμός ορισμένων μεθοδολογικών προβλημάτων με σκοπό την αξιολόγηση της κατάστασης των ιχθυοπληθυσμών σε ποτάμια διακοπτόμενης ροή
