Incidence of the Augmented Reality on the teaching of history. An experience in third year class of primary education

In the following study, the integration of Augmented Reality is valued as an emerging technology with strong possibilities of application in the educational field. In our study, a teaching unit «Time and History» of the Social Science subject in the third course of Primary Education has been implemented. Using different historic 3d image from SketchUp software, specifically the models used have been taken from Warehouse as Augmented Reality scenes and have been visualized through the pc software Aumentaty Author. The sample includes 56 students attending a school in the province of Albacete (Spain). From a quasi-experimental design with a control and an experimental group two dimensions have been analysed: the academic performance and different motivational variables. This paper includes detailed information about the teaching unit, defining contents and time of each session. Unlike other similar studies, this work does not show significant improvement in the students’ academic performance or in their motivation. However, students do believe to have participated actively and that the tool facilitates the learning process making it easy and clear. Moreover, thanks to this method, students have had the chance to work in small groups, improving the cooperation and the social integration, as well as learning the interactive and virtual possibilities that this tool could offer and which help them to improve the digital competence and the searching and information selection skills.En la presente investigación se valora la integración de la Realidad Aumentada como tecnología emergente con fuertes posibilidades de aplicación en el terreno educativo. Se implementa la unidad didáctica «Time and History» de la materia de Ciencias Sociales de 3.er curso de Educación Primaria. Se utilizan como recurso educativo diferentes modelos de imágenes históricas en 3d descargadas del programa de modelado SketchUp, en concreto, se han manejado modelos de la galería Warehouse como escenas de Realidad Aumentada y se visualizan a través del programa para ordenador Aumentaty Author. La muestra está formada por 56 estudiantes de un colegio situado en la provincia de Albacete (España) y a partir de un diseño cuasiexperimental con un grupo control y un grupo experimental se analizan el rendimiento académico y diversas variables motivacionales. En el artículo se detalla la propuesta didáctica, se definen las sesiones, el contenido y el tiempo de cada una de ellas. Por otra parte, a diferencia de otros estudios de corte similar, en este no se muestran mejoras significativas en cuanto al rendimiento académico o la motivación, pero el alumnado sí considera que ha participado de forma activa y que la herramienta les permite un aprendizaje de forma más sencilla y clara. A través de esta intervención los alumnos han tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en pequeño grupo, mejorando la cooperación y la integración social, así como aprender las posibilidades interactivas y virtuales que ofrece este dispositivo y que ayuda a mejorar su competencia digital y las habilidades de búsqueda y selección de información
