Stem cells display the unique property to replenish themselves through self-renewal and, also, to differentiate into specialized cells types and structures. There are two major groups in which the stem cells are divided; the embryonic stem cells (ESC), which are isolated from the inner mass of the blastocyst, and the adult stem cells (ASC), which are located in various tissues, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue and dental pulp. A subcategory of adult stem cells are the mesenchymal cells.
