Euthanasia in greek reality, concerns and attitudes of the relatives of the patients hospitalized in the ICU

Introduction: Euthanasia is a subject of challenge and has now gained medical, legal political, social and even economical status. There are countries where the legal framework is in favor of euthanasia under certain conditions and countries, like Greece which have not instituted any specific frameworks. Reflection and debate on euthanasia stems essentially from the apparent conflict with the right to life, now internationally protected and guaranteed constitutionally, almost all countriesPurpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge and attitude of relatives / friends of patients hospitalized in the ICU towards euthanasia.Materials - Method: Follwing the approval of the study by the Scientific Council Attica General Hospital a questionnaire was given to 143 relatives / friends critically ill patients hospitalized in ICU and had APACHE Score ≥ 20.Results: 50.7% of the sample were female and 33.6% was the patient's parents. 62.9% of respondents considered the quality of life of the patient more important compared to the value of life. 48.3% of the study sample were in favor of euthanasia and 66.4% knew little / too little about euthanasia. 48.3% of the sampled individuals agreed to institutionalize euthanasia under certain conditions. We found statistically significant correlations (p <0,001) in the intent to discontinue the therapy consensus with the patient's age and his state of health.Conclusions: The issue of euthanasia is a challenge for society. The institutionalization of the discontinuation of the treatment under certain conditions, including the right of patient self-management is an important issue in matter of legal, social, moral and religious standards. Informing people about euthanasia is an urgent need in order to change attitudes related to discontinuation of treatment.Εισαγωγή: Η ευθανασία αποτελεί ένα θέμα πρόκληση που έχει πλέον αποκτήσει ιδιαίτερη ιατρική, νομική πολιτική, κοινωνική ακόμα και οικονομική υπόσταση. Υπάρχουν χώρες που το νομοθετικό πλαίσιο που τάσσετε υπέρ της ευθανασίας υπό όρου και χώρες όπως και η Ελλάδα που ακόμη δεν έχουν θεσμοθετήσει κάτι συγκεκριμένο. Ο προβληματισμός και ο διάλογος για την ευθανασία πηγάζει ουσιαστικά από την εμφανή σύγκρουσή της με το δικαίωμα της ζωής, που σήμερα προστατεύεται διεθνώς και κατοχυρώνεται συνταγματικά, σχεδόν από όλες τις χώρες.Σκοπός: Σκοπός της παρούσας μελέτης είναι η διερεύνηση της γνώσης και στάσης των συγγενών/φίλων των ασθενών που νοσηλεύονται στην ΜΕΘ απέναντι στην ευθανασία.Υλικό – Μέθοδος: Μετά από έγκριση της μελέτης από το Επιστημονικό Συμβούλιο Γενικού Νοσοκομείου Αττικής δόθηκε αυτοσυμπληρούμενο ερωτηματολόγιο σε 143 συγγενείς/φίλους ασθενών βαρέως πασχόντων που νοσηλεύονταν στην ΜΕΘ και είχαν APACHEScore ≥ 20.Αποτελέσματα: Το 50,7% του δείγματος ήταν γυναίκες και το 33,6% ήταν οι γονείς του ασθενή. Το 62,9% των συμμετεχόντων θεωρούσε πιο σημαντική την ποιότητα ζωής του ασθενή τους σε σύγκριση με την αξία της ζωής τους. Το 48,3% του δείγματος της μελέτης ήταν υπέρ της ευθανασίας και το 66,4% γνώριζε λίγα/πολύ λίγα για την ευθανασία.
