Abstract

Passive seismic energy dissipation systems, such as friction dampers, metallic –yielding- dampers, viscous dampers etc. have been proposed to reduce the dynamic response of structures under seismic excitations. Numerous such devices have been used for the strengthening of existing or new structures in USA, Canada, Japan and elsewhere. The efficacy of such devices towards the anti-earthquake design of structures seeks to minimize the extent of damages upon them, by means of absorbing a considerable amount of the seismic energy input due to the hysteretic behaviour of them.
