Cellular senescence (CS) is defined as the irreversible cell cycle arrest attributed either to telomere attrition or to stressful stimuli and is considered a tumor suppressor mechanism. It consists a challenging field of research as it merges natural aging , chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis pathways. To study the phenomenon efficiently as well as quantitatively the in vitro and in vivo identification of senescent cells is essential. The hitherto most reliable biomarker of CS is the detection of Senescence-Associated beta-galactosidase acti vity (SA-β-gal).
