Background Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is a pathophysiologic hallmark of severetraumatic brain injury (TBI). The former has been traditionally monitored in theintensive care unit (ICU), invasively by intracranial catheters. Lately, as physicianshave been gradually moving away from ICP based therapies to CPP based concepts inthe management of patients with TBI, non-invasive techniques such as TranscranialColor coded Doppler (TCD) and optic nerve sheath diameter measurements, havebeen introduced in clinical practice for ICP monitoring. The optic nerve sheathdiameter (ONSD) has been reported to be increased in patients with intracranialhypertension. Direct measurement of the ONSD is possible by means of optic nervesonography.
