The main aim of this thesis is to investigate the implications of asymmetries of accounting earnings on decision making. We distinguish such asymmetries in two main categories. The first considers the distributional properties of earning, and hence focuses on the potential consequences of the asymmetric distribution of earnings. The second refers to the time-series properties of earnings; thereby it focuses on the potential consequences of the asymmetric evolution of earnings (i.e., heterogeneous persistence or sustainability). To illustrate the economic importance of each of the above two issues, we examine each category of asymmetry within separate empirical contexts. Specifically, we investigate the implications of asymmetries in the distribution of earnings with regard to risk and its linkage with business strategies. On the other hand, for the examination of the implications of the asymmetric persistence in earnings, we adopt a more technical approach, and examine how the elements of the earnings generating contribute to asymmetric mean reversion patterns.Regarding the first type of asymmetry, we follow the strategy taxonomy of Miles and Snow from the organization literature. In this regard, we rely on decision and resource allocation patterns and categorize firms into Prospectors and Defenders. Prospectors are externally oriented organizations, embrace uncertainty, and grow rapidly as they concentrate their efforts in pioneering new products and exploiting market opportunities. At the opposite extreme, defenders are efficiency-oriented firms that operate on narrow and well-established markets. They compete on the basis of pricing policies and high quality products, prefer stability and consistent outcomes, and do not aggressively pursue new opportunities. The empirical analysis indicates that prospectors have lower profitability tendencies and greater occurrences of losses than defenders. Additionally, we show that prospectors are associated with higher total and downside earnings risk than defenders.Further analysis reveals that the higher (lower) exposure of prospectors to earnings downside (upside) risk is driven by the realized component rather than the accrual component. Specifically, we find that the conservative and efficient investment policy of defenders seems to pay off, as they have as they are exposed to lower downside cash flow risk and higher upside cash flow risk. On the other hand, the growth potential of prospectors is concentrated on the accrual component of earnings, as they have lower downside accrual risk and higher upside accruals risk than defenders.Regarding the second type of asymmetry, we focus on whether earnings of firms with different infrastructure converge at common target, at potentially heterogeneous speeds. To test the hypothesis of heterogeneous mean reversion patterns we adopt a novel empirical approach to test for nonlinear dynamic mean reversion patterns. In particular, we build on the work of Dang et al. (2012) by employing a dynamic mean reverting threshold model of economic rents. The advantage of this approach is that it allows for asymmetries in the convergence process for firms in different regimes associated with different firm characteristics. In this framework, the conventional symmetric mean reverting model adopted in the literature becomes misspecified while our regime-switching dynamic model emerges as more appropriate, as it recognizes the state-dependent nature of the nexus between profitability and its economic drivers.We document a rich pattern of nonlinearities in the behaviour of profits. Specifically, gross margin, volatility, accruals and investments trigger the most significant asymmetries, with gross margin being the leading indicator of asymmetries. Further, we investigate the degree of bias in the persistence coefficient of profits across a variety of contexts, and find that the linear model is less misspecified in settings characterized by large firms, a large amount of fixed expenses and low asset turnover. Finally, we demonstrate that the forecasting role of the drivers of profitability is distinctively different in a nonlinear model as opposed to the linear. For instance, we find that while volatility leads to less persistent profits its impact on the level of future profits is not statistically significant. Additionally, while asset turnover contributes to higher subsequent earnings, its impact on the sustainability of earnings is questionable, especially for firms with very high asset utilisation. Finally, the statistical different coefficients of many of the earnings determinants across a variety of regimes imply that earnings may converge towards different benchmarksΣτην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή, εξετάζονται οι επιπτώσεις της ασυμμετρίας των λογιστικών κερδών στη λήψη οικονομικών αποφάσεων. Για το σκοπό αυτό διακρίνουμε την ασυμμετρία των κεδρών σε δύό κατηγορίες: (1) την ασυμμετρία στην κατανομή, και (2) την ασυμμετρία στη δυναμική συμπεριφορά των κερδών. Ουσιαστικά, η πρώτη μορφή ασυμμετρίας σχετίζεται με τις επιπτώσεις από το σχήμα της κατανομής των κερδών (όπως λ.χ., το βαθμό ασυμμετρίας ή λοξότητας), ενώ η δεύτερη αναφέρεται στην ενδεχόμενη ετερογένεια στο βαθμό διατηρησιμότητας των κερδών ή σε διαφορές στην ταχύτητα σύγκλισης στο μακροχρόνιο μέσο. Αν και οι δύο παραπάνω μορφές αλληλoσυνδέονται, οι πρακτικές επιπτώσεις τους εξετάζονται σε διαφορετικά εμπερικά περιβάλλοντα, ώστε να είναι περισότερο κατανοητές και ξεκάθαρες οι επιπτώσεις τους.Για να εξετάσουμε τις επιπτώσεις της ασυμμετρίας στην κατανομή των κερδών, εστιάζουμε την προσοχή μας στη σχέση εταιρικών ανταγωνιστικών στρατηγικών με την πιθάνοτητα εμφάνισης θετικών ή/και αρνητικών ενδεχομένων. Για το σκοπό αυτό ακολουθούμε το μοντέλο των Miles and Snow από τη βιβλιογραφία της οργανωσιακής συμπεριφοράς. Κατά συνέπεια, διακρίνουμε τις εταιρικές στρατηγικές σε καινοτόμες-ρισκαδόρες (Prospectors) και συντηρητικές (Defenders). Το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό της συγκεκριμένης ταξινόμησης είναι ότι διακρίνει τις επιχειρήσεις ανάλογα με πρότυπα κατανομής πόρων και επενδυτικής συμπεριφοράς. Ειδικότερα, η πρώτη κατηγορία επιχειρήσεων (Prospectors) ανταποκρίνεται στις προκλήσεις του ανταγωνισμού δίνοντας έμφαση στην καινοτομία και στην τεχνολογική ευελιξία, θυσιάζοντας ταυτόχρονα και αναπόφευκτα ένα σημαντικό βαθμό αποτελεσματικότητας. Η δεύτερη κατηγορία επιχειρήσεων (Defenders) ανταποκρίνεται στις προκλήσεις του περιβάλλοντοας δίνοτας έμφαση στην αποτελεσματικότητα, και τη διαχείριση του κόστους μέσα από αγορές με χαμηλή μεταβλητότητα και σχετικά προβλέψιμα γεγονότα. Από την ανάλυση προκύπτει ότι ανταγωνιστικές στρατηγικές που βασίζονται καινοτόμες δραστηριότητες και υψηλούς ρυθμούς μεταβλητότητας είναι λιγότερο και κερδοφόρες και περισσότερο επικίνδυνες, ήτοι εμφανίζουν μεγαλύτερη ροπή προς αρνητικά ενδεχόμενα.Για να εξετάσουμε τις επιπτώσεις της άσυμμετρης σύγκλίσης των κερδών, εξετάζουμε εάν υπάρχει ομοιογενής ή ετερογενής επιστροφή στο μακροχρόνιο μέσο (mean reversion hypothesis), και πιο συγκεκριμένα αν υπάρχει κοινή ταχύτητα σύγκλισης προς ένα ή περρισσότερα σημεία σύγκλισης (σημείο ισορροπίας). Για το σκοπό αυτό, χρησιοποιούμε από το περιβάλλον κάθε επιχειρησης. Για το σκοπό αυτό χρησιμοποιούμε ένα panel threshold, regime-switching mean reverting model, δηλαδή ένα μοντέλο κερδών το οποίο επιτρέπει ετερογένειες στην ταχύτητα σύγκλισης και το σημείο σύγκλισης.Το πλεονέκτημα της μεθόδου αυτής είναι ότι – σε αντίθετη με την υπάρχουσα βιβλιογραφία – κατηγοριοποιεί τις επιχειρήσεις με βάση ένα threshold το οποίο εκτιμάται ενδογενώς, αποφεύγοντας έτσι μερολοψίες και αυθέρετες επιλογές κρίσιμων σημείων (π.χ., δεκατημόρια, ή τεραρτημορία). Χρησιμοποιώντας έξι διαφορετικές regime-switching (transition) variables βρίσκουμε ότι σε περιβάλλοντα που χαρακτηρίζονται από μικρή μεταβλητότητα κέρδών, υψηλά μικτά περιθωρία κέρδους, υψηλές επενδύσεις, μικρούς ρυθμούς ανάπτυξης (δεδουλευμένα), και μεγάλο μεγεθος επιχειρήσεων έχουν μικρότερες ταχύτερες σύγκλισης (ταχύτητα επιστροφής στο μέσο) σε σχέση με επιχειρήσεις που βρίσκονται στα αντίθετα περιβάλλοντα. Από αυτές τις μεταβλητές, οι μεγαλύτερες ασυμμετρίες στην ταχύτητα σύγκλισης προκύπτουν από το βαθμό μεταβλητότητας και το ύψος των μικτών περιθωρίων κέρδους. Επιπλέον, βρίσκουμε ότι τα κέρδη δεν επιστρέφουν απαραίτητα στην ίδια τιμή ισορροπίας, και αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα εμφανές όταν χρησιμοποιούνται ως transition variables τα μικτά περιθώρια κέρδους, οι επενδύσεις και σε μικρότερο βαθμό η μεταβλητότητα
