The aim of this dissertation was to assess whether the use of an “adjuvant” (such as pregabalin) should be preferred to the use of a strong opioid for the management of patients with neuropathic cancer pain. We conducted a randomized, head-to-head study in patients with moderate-to-severe “definite” neuropathic cancer pain in which we compared the use of fentanyl (group A) to the use of pregabalin (group B) when both were added on a basic analgesic regimen. We also studied the use of the DN4 questionnaire for screening purposes, as well as the effectiveness of the WHO analgesic scale, in this type of pain.
