Study of viral infections in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Previous studies have reported very different rates of human rhinovirus (HRV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) genome detection in nasal and sputum samples, but not in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and bronchial biopsy samples. Our study aimed to investigate the presence of HRV and RSV in the lungs of 31 consecutive patients with stable COPD (11 GOLD stage I, 11 II, and 9 III) and 22 control subjects (12 current or past smokers, and 10 non-smokers), who underwent diagnostic (e.g., lung cancer) and/or therapeutic (e.g., hemoptysis) fibreoptic bronchoscopy in a university hospital in Athens, Greece. Viral RNA of HRV and RSV were not detected in any of the samples of COPD patients or control subjects after being processed with real-time PCR.Προηγούμενες μελέτες ανέφεραν διαφορετικά ποσοστά ανίχνευσης ρινοϊών (HRV) και αναπνευστικού συγκυτιακού ιού (RSV) σε δείγματα ρινικού επιχρίσματος και πτυέλων, αλλά ποτέ σε βρογχοκυψελιδικό έκπλυμα (BAL) και βρογχικές βιοψίες. Η μελέτη αυτή είχε σαν στόχο να μελετήσει την παρουσία των HRV και RSV στους πνεύμονες 31 ασθενών με σταθερή ΧΑΠ (11 σταδίου Ι κατά GOLD, 11ΙΙ και 9ΙΙΙ) και σε 22 υγιείς μάρτυρες (12 νυν ή πρώην καπνιστές και 10 μη καπνιστές), οι οποίοι υπεβλήθησαν σε διαγνωστική (π.χ. καρκίνο πνεύμονος) και/ή θεραπευτική (π.χ. αιμόπτυση) ινοπτική βρογχοσκόπηση σε ένα νοσοκομείο της Αθήνας, Ελλάδας. Δεν ανιχνεύθηκε ιϊκό RNA ούτε του HRV ούτε του RSV σε κανένα από τα δείγματα τόσο των ασθενών με ΧΑΠ όσο και των υγιών μαρτύρων έπειτα από επεξεργασία με τη μέθοδο real-time PCR
