The holy church of Saint George in Old Cairo

On the eastern shore of the Nile, almost five kilometers south to the center of Cairo facing the pyramids of Giza and the ancient Memphis area, lies one of the most populated suburbs of Cairo, with monasteries churches and cemeteries. It is called Old Cairo or Old Egypt. There has survived parts of the mentioned by Strabo and other writers roman Fortress of Babylon.The fortress used to protect the entrance of a channel that reached the Red Sea, the construction of which is related to the emperor Trajan, while the fortress itself is of the era of Diocletian.The fortress has strong walls and multiple great towers along its sides. Two of the towers in the western side which are circular and greater than the rest, secured the entrance to the channel between them that formed a port.Those towers with a diameter of 27 m host a central chamber with a diameter of 10 m and eight equal chambers around it, one of which was the staircase.On top of one of those great towers, the northern, lies the katholikon of the Greek Orthodox monastery of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, which is dedicated to the memory of St. George, who according to tradition martyred in the tower’s prison. We don’t hold much information about the history of the Monastery and the church itself at the time when Christianity was established in the area, the 4th century. Nevertheless the creation of churches inside the fortress must have followed a gradually increasing course, which reached its peak when the fortress was no longer functioning as a military building following the invasion of the Arabs on 640 A.D. and continued with church exchanges between the Orthodox and the monophysits Copts in the next centuries, as the building of new churches was almost terminated.After the Arab conquest, the city of Al-Fustat was founded in the area of Babylon, which had a remarkable population growth the following century. As a result the area of the fortress was itself included into the urban fabric of the new city and that led to the gradual loss of its military functions.The first documented reports for the existence of the church of St. George date back to the 14th century, and also document the existence of a nilometer inside the tower. The nilometers were used to help calculate the amount of taxes, based on the relation between the agricultural corps and the yearly water level variation of the Nile.The next centuries we have references that the monastery with the Tsars help operated as a nunnery, hospital and hotel.On 1798 and during the French campaign in the then Ottoman Egypt, in the framework of the greater scientific study of the land and its civilization, which filled the 35 great volumes of the “Description de l’ Égypte”, the wider area of old Cairo including the fortress was surveyed by architects for the first time.On 1897 the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l’Art Arabe, a governmental institution for the preservation of Egyptian civilization commences a series of surveys in Old Cairo. In this framework the oldest known of scientific quality drawing of the tower and the church was conducted.In the years 1906-1909 the church as we know it today was built by the architect Nikolaos Kairis, in the place of the old which was destroyed by fire (17 August 1904).The tower is now divided in four levels, three of which are of roman era and the fourth hosts the contemporary church of St. George. The lowest level and part of the level above it were long forgotten under later backfill. The original concept of the church as the architect first conceived it differed from what was later on implemented. According to the original designs, the church would have been circular in plan but with cruciform characteristics. The cylindrical part would have been divided into two parts, with the lowest circular and the top cross shaped. The Patriarch Fotios preferred a clear circular shape. Even though the architect warned that many technical issues would arise during construction, the Patriarchs opinion prevailed and the designs were altered. The church constructed is of the circumcenter circular type with a dome.The choice of the circular shape was definitely influenced from the circular shape of the tower, but it also presented a semantic symbolism of a martyrium or burial site. The circular shape followed the examples of the Mausoleum of St. Costanza in Rome of the 4th century, St. Stefano Rotondo, the Rotonda of Thessaloniki, as well as the circular church of the early Christian era martyr of St. Vitalis in Ravena.The inauguration of the church was held on 1st of November 1909. The building campaign in addition to the circular part of the church, as it is visible today, also included the removal of later structures from the tower levels, the selective stone refacing of the roman masonry and the addition of the exterior colonnade.The church is built on a concrete slab on top of the tower. Large blocks of limestone is used in the masonry, which has a width of 0.70 m and a height of 10 m and 24 m on its highest point in the dome.The morphology of the underlying levels was followed in the church with the division of the plan into eight parts, a fundamental element used in the design of the plan. In correspondence with the towers spoke walls, eight spoke arches carry eight cross vaults. The eight columns are bridged with arches, which create a full circle arcade instead of a more technically appropriate octagon. The columns are painted with a faux-marble finish, and carry large composite column capitals which are decorated with Corinthian acanthus leaves as well as volutes, the capitals are all painted as to appear gold.On top of the arcade rests the 5 m drum, which in turn carries the 12 m in diameter dome. The drum has sixteen typical single lobed windows. The center of the dome is dominated by the painting of the Lord Almighty surrounded by eight angelic figures in addition to eight paintings between the drum windows, all of the above paintings belong to Konstantinos Parthenis.The church has one entrance from the contemporary narthex, as well as four similar arched doors in addition to one smaller inside the sanctuary. All the above openings have wooden frames and leaves and are decorated with colored glass. The ratio between solid and void is very small in addition to the great height of the church, thus creating a dark environment which provides the guests with a feeling of mystery and awe.To the south a small staircase gives access to the lower levels to the chapels inside the tower. The architect opened an octagonal opening centrally in the slab, to give attention to the location of the nilometer. The opening penetrates the slab all the way to the lowest level of the tower.The iconostasis has a height of 9 m, and is constructed from masonry with a faux-marble finish as well, in plan it consists of three joined arcs. In the side arcs, lie the southern and northern gates, while in the center arc lies the holy door, having a pulpit in each side.In the 1920’s a small bell tower was constructed in the same location where the later and greater bell tower stands today and in 1926 the canopy of the icon of St. George that survived the 1904 fire was put in place.In the early 1940’s the external colonnade of 1909 was heavily damaged due to differential settlements. This led to the demolition of the exterior wall along with the bell tower. This gave way to a new building campaign in the property of the patriarchate, both inside and outside the fortress. The campaign included the construction of new external stairs, new abbey and the Mouratiadio elderly house, in a location facing the fortress, on the other side of the train rails (where the Nile riverbed used to be and where the metro line is today).The architectural design of the stairs and the new external wall was conducted by the architect Ioannis Nikolaidis from Alexandria. The project was sponsored by Theodoros Kotsikas, president of the Greek Community at the time, his wife Despina Mpenaki as well as Konstantinos Mouratiadis, president of the Greek Red Cross at the time along with his wife Aikaterini Karatheodori.The architect wanting to highlight the historical importance of the area and that of the Greek Patriarchate and to combine it with that of the roman architecture of the tower, chose to introduce many eclectic elements. Thus creating an architectural complex with intense influence by the beaux-art movement, which best served his design and morphological intents.He rebuilt the demolished exterior colonnade and replaced it with a more solid design with an addition of a large arched opening to the south, so that the tower would remain visible from the outside. Many classical/roman elements were added together with elements influenced by Islamic and byzantine architecture.The stairs design made use of the same central point of the whole building campaign: the center of the ancient tower and the church. The massive volume of the stairs was combined with the creation of many spaces adjacent and below. A symmetry and hierarchy of spaces was followed, having two stairs reach an intermediate level, where a central stair gave way to a higher level, where again two symmetrical and tangent to the tower stairs led to the church level. The morphology of the narthex on the northwestern elevation between the two symmetrical stairs hosts the carved icon of the Saint and is designed as pilasters holding a doric entablature. This massive monumental campaign also included the construction of a new bell tower with monumental characteristics as well, in harmony with the old and the new.On the church’s sub level which was also restored, some of the chambers functioned as a church museums and library, while one level even lower, the church of the Forty Martyrs was created as it is today. In the lowest level the chapels of St. Theodoros and that of the prison of St. George were created. Externally to the tower the chapels of Aliseos, the Holy Apostles and St. Christopher were also created.The works came to a halt on 1948 with many parts left uncompleted, as can be seen today.The next fifty years that followed the monastery and the church had no major modifications, the patriarchate with the means it had delayed the wear of time. While the rise of the underground water level gradually blocked the access for many years.Between the years of 2000-2006 a geotechnical project commenced with the purpose to create a drainage system in Old Cairo. The works gave a chance for archeological investigations, which in turn gave light to valuable information. This in effect lowered the water level. The access to the historical levels of the tower is now once again possible.ConclusionThe in depth study of the building history of the church of St. George in Old Cairo confirms the great importance of all of its construction phases, along with its historical phases. By studying the historical frame during which the place was built and functioned, the importance of the church is also confirmed.The architectural analysis of the church and that of the complex of the northern tower along with the survey and photographic documentation are a unique record of the architecture of the complex in a period just before the commencement of the recent construction works.Regarding the typology and the architectural design, valuable information has revealed from the research of the building type. The analysis of the roman tower provided information regarding roman architecture in Egypt. While the researching the old and the contemporary church of St. George gave valuable information regarding the martyrium architecture in early Christian years. In addition to that, the unique work of two important Greek architects of the 20th century who lived in Egypt was documented.Regarding the typology and morphology of the sculptural and painted decorations, while surveyed they were alongside studied analyzed and explained typologically.All of the above were used as a tool for the analysis and differentiation of the construction phases of the complex. From the above mentioned analysis it is understood that the church of St. George as we see it today is a result of multiple additions and works.The information that has been revealed from the study of other churches that were created inside the northern tower during its history is also of great importance. The bibliographical research of the architecture of the old St. George church as well as the church of the Forty Martyrs or St. Catherine, led to important conclusions, since the location of the last can now be pinpointed to a specific chamber on the third level of the tower.Regarding the building construction of the complex, it has been studied and analyzed by the means of differentiation of the materials used during its building history.The study of the use of limestone and laboratory analysis of the materials, provided valuable information for the origin and the types of stones selected in relation to the function and use. Also the study of reinforced concrete that was used in two separate phases provided information for its use in those early years of concrete existence.Finally the dynamics of the Patriarchate of Alexandria together with that of the Greek Community in Cairo were noted. A dynamic that led to the creation of vast architectural wealth greatly influenced by the corresponding architectural and artistic movements that was simultaneously in development in Europe.Στην ανατολική όχθη του Νείλου, πέντε περίπου χιλιόμετρα νοτίως του κέντρου του Καΐρου απέναντι από τις Πυραμίδες της Γκίζας και γενικότερα την περιοχή της αρχαίας Μέμφιδας, βρίσκεται ένα από τα πλέον πυκνοκατοικημένα προάστια του Καΐρου, με μοναστήρια, ναούς και νεκροταφεία. Ονομάζεται Παλαιό Κάιρο ή Παλαιά Αίγυπτος. Εκεί σώζονται τμήματα του αναφερόμενου από τον Στράβωνα και άλλους συγγραφείς ρωμαϊκού Φρουρίου της Βαβυλώνας.Το φρούριο προστάτευε την είσοδο διώρυγας που έφθανε έως την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα, της οποίας η κατασκευή συνδέεται κυρίως με τον αυτοκράτορα Τραϊανό, ενώ καθεαυτό το φρούριο ανάγεται στην εποχή του Διοκλητιανού. Το φρούριο είχε ισχυρά τείχη και πλήθος μεγάλων πύργων σε όλες τις πλευρές. Εξ αυτών δύο στην δυτική πλευρά πολύ μεγαλύτεροι των λοιπών και τελείως κυκλικοί, ασφάλιζαν το μεταξύ αυτών στόμιο της διώρυγας το οποίο ήταν διαμορφωμένο ως λιμένας. Ο Πύργοι αυτοί, με διάμετρο 27 μ., περιέχουν κεντρικό κυκλικό χώρο διαμέτρου 10 μ. και γύρω από αυτόν οκτώ περίπου ίσους χώρους, εκ των οποίων ο ένας ανήκε στο κλιμακοστάσιο. Στον ένα από τους δύο γιγάντιους πύργους, τον βόρειο, είναι κτισμένο το καθολικό της Ελληνορθόδοξης Μονής του Πατριαρχείου Αλεξανδρείας, αφιερωμένο στη μνήμη του Αγίου Γεωργίου, ο οποίος κατά την θρησκευτική παράδοση μαρτύρησε εκεί, στη φυλακή του πύργου.Διαθέτουμε ελάχιστα στοιχεία για την ιστορία της Μονής και του ναού την εποχή της εδραίωσης του Χριστιανισμού στη περιοχή, τον 4ου αιώνα. Η λειτουργία όμως ναών εντός του φρουρίου θα ακολούθησε μια σταδιακά αυξανόμενη πορεία, η οποία κορυφώθηκε μετά το τέλος λειτουργίας του φρουρίου ως στρατιωτικού κτηρίου με την εισβολή των Αράβων στην Αίγυπτο το 640 μ.Χ. και συνεχίστηκε με τις ανταλλαγές ναών μεταξύ ορθοδόξων και μονοφυσιτών Κοπτών τους επόμενους αιώνες, καθώς η οικοδόμηση νέων ναών σχεδόν διεκόπη.Αμέσως μετά την επικράτηση των Αράβων ιδρύθηκε στη Βαβυλώνα η πόλη Αλ-Φουστάτ, η οποία γνώρισε εκρηκτική πληθυσμιακή αύξηση τον επόμενο αιώνα. Το παραπάνω γεγονός οδήγησε στην ένταξη της ευρύτερης περιοχής περιμετρικά του φρουρίου στον πολεοδομικό ιστό της νέας πόλης και την σταδιακή συνεπώς απώλεια του στρατιωτικού του χαρακτήρα.Οι πρώτες τεκμηριωμένες αναφορές για την ύπαρξη του ναού του Αγίου Γεωργίου ανάγονται στον 14ο αιώνα, και εκτός του ναού αφορούν και στο νειλόμετρο που κάποτε λειτουργούσε στη θέση του πύργου. Τα νειλόμετρα μεταξύ άλλων χρησίμευαν και στον προσδιορισμό του ύψους των φόρων λόγω της άμεσης σχέσης των ετήσιων διακυμάνσεων της παραγωγής με εκείνες της ροής του Νείλου. Τους επόμενους αιώνες υπάρχουν αναφορές πως η Μονή με τσαρική βοήθεια λειτουργούσε ως γυναικείο μοναστήρι, νοσοκομείο και ξενοδοχείο.Το 1798 κατά τη Γαλλική Εκστρατεία στην τότε Οθωμανική Αίγυπτο και ειδικότερα στο πλαίσιο της ολικής επιστημονικής μελέτης του τόπου και του πολιτισμού του, η οποία γεμίζει τους 35 εξαιρετικού μεγέθους τόμους της «Description de l’ Égypte», αρχιτέκτονες αποτύπωσαν για πρώτη φορά την ευρύτερη περιοχή του Παλαιού Καΐρου καθώς και του Φρουρίου Το 1897 η Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l’ Art Arabe, μια κρατική υπηρεσία για τη διάσωση του αιγυπτιακού πολιτισμού, πραγματοποιεί σειρά αποτυπώσεων του Παλαιού Καΐρου. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο έγιναν και τα παλαιότερα επιστημονικής ποιότητος σχέδια του Πύργου και του ναού.Κατά τα έτη 1906-1909, με ευθύνη του αρχιτέκτονα Νικολάου Καΐρη, ανεγείρεται ο σημερινός ναός στη θέση του αρχικού, ο οποίος είχε καταστραφεί από πυρκαγιά (17 Αυγούστου το 1904).Ο Πύργος διαιρείται σήμερα σε τέσσερα επίπεδα εκ των οποίων τα τρία πρώτα είναι της ρωμαϊκής εποχής, ενώ στο τέταρτο βρίσκεται ο σύγχρονος ναός του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Το κατώτερο, καθώς και τμήματα του υπερκειμένου, ήταν αφανή και λησμονημένα κάτω από μεταγενέστερες επιχώσεις. Η αρχική μορφή του ναού, όπως την οραματιζόταν ο αρχιτέκτων, διέφερε σημαντικά από το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Σύμφωνα με τα αρχικά σχέδια ο ναός θα ήταν κυκλικός σε κάτοψη, με χαρακτηριστικά σταυροειδούς. Το κυλινδρικό τμήμα θα χωριζόταν σε δύο τμήματα καθ’ ύψος, το κατώτερο κυκλικό, ενώ το ανώτερο σε σχήμα σταυρού. Ο Πατριάρχης Φώτιος, όμως προτιμούσε και πρότεινε μια καθαρά κυκλική μορφή. Παρά την άποψη του αρχιτέκτονα ότι η μορφή αυτή θα δημιουργούσε ανυπέρβλητα τεχνικά προβλήματα κατά τη κατασκευή, η πρόταση του Πατριάρχη επικράτησε και η μελέτη τροποποιήθηκε. Ο ναός που κατασκευάστηκε εντάσσεται στον τύπο του περίκεντρου κυκλικού με τρούλο.Η επιλογή της κυκλικής διαμόρφωσης αφ’ ενός στηρίχθηκε στη δεσμευτική μορφή της κυκλικής κάτοψης του Πύργου και αφετέρου εξυπηρετούσε την ιδέα ενός σημειολογικού συμβολισμού του ναού ως τόπου μαρτυρίου ή ταφής. Η κυκλική μορφή ακολούθησε τα παραδείγματα του Μαυσωλείου της Santa Constanza στη Ρώμη του 4ου αιώνα μ.Χ., του St. Stefano Rotondo της Ροτόντας στη Θεσσαλονίκη, καθώς και του κυκλικού ναού, του επίσης μάρτυρα της πρώιμης χριστιανικής εποχής, Αγίου Βιταλίου στη Ραβέννα. Τα εγκαίνια του Ναού έγιναν την 1η Νοεμβρίου 1909. Το οικοδομικό πρόγραμμα περιελάμβανε πέρα από την οικοδόμηση του κυλινδρικού τμήματος του ναού όπως αυτό είναι ορατό σήμερα, την αφαίρεση αρκετών νεωτέρων προσθηκών από τα υπόλοιπα επίπεδα του Πύργου, την επένδυση κατά τόπους της ρωμαϊκής λιθοδομής με σύγχρονη, την προσθήκη εξωτερικού περιβόλου με κιονοστοιχία.Ο ναός, είναι κατασκευασμένος πάνω σε πλάκα σκυροδέματος που εδράζεται στο Πύργο. Γίνεται χρήση μεγάλων λαξευτών ασβεστόλιθων για την λιθοδομή, η οποία έχει πάχος περίπου 0,70 μ. και φτάνει σε ύψος τα 10 μ. περιμετρικά και τα 24 μ. στο ανώτατο σημείο του τρούλου.Ακολουθείται η μορφολογία των υποκείμενων επιπέδων με τον χωρισμό της κυκλικής κάτοψης σε οκτώ τμήματα, στοιχείο που υπήρξε βασικό στη σύνθεση της κάτοψης του ναού. Σε αντιστοιχία με τους εγκάρσιους τοίχους του Πύργου, οκτώ εγκάρσια ακτινωτά τόξα, φέρουν οκτώ σταυροθόλια. Οι οκτώ κίονες γεφυρώνονται με τόξα που αντί να ακολουθούν την τεχνικώς ορθότερη μορφή του οκταγώνου, είναι καμπύλα σε κάτοψη, ώστε να απαρτίζουν πλήρη κύκλο. Οι κίονες είναι επιχρισμένοι κατά τον τρόπο του υδρόλουστρου, ώστε να φαίνονται σαν μαρμάρινοι και φέρουν στη κορυφή τους μεγάλα κιονόκρανα σύνθετα, με κορινθιακές άκανθες και ιωνικές έλικες, τα οποία είναι επιχρωματισμένα ώστε να φαίνονται χρυσά.Επί της κιονοστοιχίας φέρεται τύμπανο ύψους 5 μ. που με τη σειρά του φέρει τον τρούλο διαμέτρου ~12.0 μ. Το τύμπανο διαθέτει δεκαέξι όμοια μονόλοβα τοξωτά ανοίγματα. Κεντρικά δεσπόζει η εικόνα του Παντοκράτορα περικυκλωμένη από οκτώ αγγελικές μορφές και μεταξύ των ανοιγμάτων του τυμπάνου συναντάμε δεκαέξι αγιογραφίες, όλες έργα του Κωνσταντίνου Παρθένη.Ο ναός διαθέτει μία είσοδο μέσω του μεταγενέστερου νάρθηκα, καθώς και άλλες τέσσερις όμοιες τοξωτές πύλες, μία μικρότερη εντός του ιερού βήματος, δέκα όμοια παράθυρα και ένα τρίλοβο στα δυτικά. Όλα τα ανοίγματα διαθέτουν ξύλινα πλαίσια στερέωσης των κινητών θυρόφυλλων και παραθυρόφυλλων που πληρούνται με μικρές γυάλινες πολύχρωμες επιφάνειες. Η αναλογία των κενών προς τα πλήρη είναι αρκετά μικρή και σε συνδυασμό με το μεγάλο ύψος του ναού δημιουργεί ένα σκοτεινό περιβάλλον που προκαλεί στον επισκέπτη αίσθημα μυστηρίου και δέους.Στα νότια μια κλίμακα οδηγεί στα κατώτερα επίπεδα, επιτρέποντας την επικοινωνία με τα εντός του Πύργου παρεκκλήσια. Θέλοντας ο αρχιτέκτων να προβάλει και την ιστορική αξία του νειλόμετρου, διαμόρφωσε στο κέντρο του ναού άνοιγμα σε σχήμα οκταγώνου, το οποίο διαπερνά όλα τα επίπεδα και καταλήγει στο ερμηνευθέν ως νειλόμετρο στο κατώτατο επίπεδο του πύργου.Το τέμπλο φτάνει σε ύψος τα 9 μ. και είναι κατασκευασμένο από λιθοδομή, με τεχνοτροπία απομίμησης φυσικού λίθου, αποτελείται από τρία τοξωτά σε κάτοψη μέρη. Στα δύο ανοίγονται η νότια και βόρεια πύλη, ενώ στο μεσαίο η ωραία πύλη, εκατέρωθεν της οποίας προβάλλουν δύο άμβωνες.Εξωτερικά οι παραστάδες ενισχύουν δομικά, αλλά και οπτικά τον τοίχο, και μαζί με μεταλλική περίδεση συγκρατούν την λιθοδομή, ενώ εκατέρωθεν όλων των ανοιγμάτων διαμορφώνονται παραστάδες που φέρουν επίκρανα που παραπέμπουν σε ιωνικό ρυθμό.Στη δεκαετία του 1920 κατασκευάστηκε μικρό κωδωνοστάσιο στη θέση του σημερινού μεγαλύτερου και το 1926 τοποθετήθηκε το κουβούκλιο της εικόνας του Αγίου Γεωργίου που είχε διαφύγει την πύρινη καταστροφή του 1904. Στις αρχές τις δεκαετίας του 1940 εμφανίστηκαν τα πρώτα προβλήματα καθιζήσεων και διαπιστώθηκε η κακή κατάσταση του εξωτερικού περιβόλου του 1909. Γεγονός που οδήγησε στην κατεδάφιση αυτού και του κω
