Statistical models for the study of factors that are associated with the duration of university studies

The thesis focuses on the study of factors associated with the duration of university studies taking into account the specificities of the Greek university education. The thesis is organized in two parts in theoretical and empirical orientation respectively. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the development of a theoretical-methodological framework/model for approaching and interpreting factors associated with the duration of studies, while on the second part the assumptions of the above framework are tested empirically on data from an Athenian University.More specifically, on the first part, of the thesis a typology of ways of student’ adaptation to the university environment/graduation typology is defined, in order to describe the graduation process taking in to consideration the specificities of Greek reality. This typology is inspired by Robert Merton’s typology of five modes of adaptation by individuals in society and defines, correspondingly, five student’s adaptational attitudes and behaviors in the University environment: Conformity, Ritualism, Innovative, Retreatism and Rebellition. Through this typology a sociological interpretation can be attributed to various values of duration of studies, which has already been previously studied (Kalamatianou 1999, 2003). This, interpretation has as follows: The Conformistic student’s attitude and behavior corresponds to a minimum duration of studies and graduation at the first possible opportunity, as defined by the relevant legislation. The Innovative and Ritualistic student’s attitude and behavior correspond to a graduation with a short delay while the Retreatistic student’s attitude and behavior corresponds to an extended duration of studies and a graduation delay. Finally, the Rebel student’s attitude and behavior corresponds to a very long duration of studies, which can lead to “perpetual” studentship.Furthermore, a conceptual model is developed through which the duration of studies is associated with specific - observed or latent factors. These factors either pro-exist student's entrance in the university or they are formulated during studies as a result of the student's interaction with the university environment. Regarding the development of the conceptual model, basic assumptions and techniques of theories and models proposed in the literature for the investigation of the phenomenon of students’ drop out or graduation’s delay not only were utilized, but also were expanded. More specifically, basic hypothesis of Vincent Tinto’s (1975) and John Bean’s (1980) theoretical models were leveraged, as well as techniques of Alberto Cabrera’s (1993) model. The second part of the thesis contains the evaluation of the conceptual model on real data from Panteion University of Athens, using three statistical methodologies: Survival Analysis, Ordinal Logistic Regression and Structural Equation Models. These statistical methodologies were also used in previous studies, individually. In this thesis, the use of the above methodologies was chosen because each one served specific analysis related to the handling of the dependent variable both as a quantitative and a qualitative one, and to the possibility provided to include in the analysis both observed and latent independent variables: Survival Analysis, and more specifically Cox’s Proportional Hazard Model, was selected because it allows the duration of studies (dependent variable) to be treated as a quantitative variable with censored values. The methodology of Ordinal Logistic Regression was selected, since it permits the duration of studies to be treated as a qualitative variable with four ordinal values. These values correspond to four different, regarding the duration of studies, graduation groups described in the student’s graduation typology. Finally, the methodology of Latent Variables Analysis and specifically Structural Equation Models are selected because they allow the investigation of observed and latent factors (variables) that are associated with the duration of studies. In this case the duration of studies can be measured either quantitatively or qualitatively on the basis of five bivariate variables where each one of them represents, each time, one of the five types of student’s graduation typology. In this way, the results that came up from the application of the three methods referred to above are bound to be mutually complementary and the most feasible. The main results from this thesis are summarized as follows: the duration of studies is influenced by observed and four latent factors. The observed factors are represented by students’ demographic characteristics and academic achievement before entering the university or during their studies. The latent factors correspond to Academic and Social Student’s Integration, as well as students’ Motives and Expectations from their studies and finally the influence of Exogenous Factors that seems to be the most important. More specifically, students’ integration in the university environment - Students’ Academic, Social Integration - their motives and expectations from studies leads to short graduation. Conversely, limited or lack of integration in the university environment, lack of expectations and low satisfaction from studies, as well as some external - imponderable factors (economic-occupational, family or personal) that students may experience during their studies, lead to delayed graduation or even to “perpetual” studentship. Η διατριβή διαρθρώνεται σε δύο μέρη με θεωρητικό και εμπειρικό προσανατολισμό αντιστοίχως. Στο πρώτο μέρος αναπτύσσεται ένα θεωρητικό - μεθοδολογικό πλαίσιο/μοντέλο για την προσέγγιση και την ερμηνεία των παραγόντων που συνδέονται με τη διάρκεια των σπουδών ενώ, στο δεύτερο μέρος ελέγχονται εμπειρικά οι υποθέσεις του μοντέλου σε δεδομένα από το Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο.Ειδικότερα, στο πρώτο μέρος, ορίζεται αρχικά μια τυπολογία στάσεων και συμπεριφορών προσαρμογής του φοιτητή στο περιβάλλον του πανεπιστημίου, που περιγράφει τη διαδικασία αποφοίτησης και αποτυπώνει τις ιδιομορφίες της ελληνικής πραγματικότητας. Η τυπολογία αυτή αντλεί από την τυπολογία των πέντε τρόπων ατομικής συμπεριφοράς του Robert Merton για την προσαρμογή του ατόμου στην κοινωνία και ορίζει, κατ’ αντιστοιχία, πέντε φοιτητικές στάσεις και συμπεριφορές προσαρμογής του φοιτητή στο περιβάλλον του Πανεπιστημίου: Κομφορμιστική, Τυπολατρική, Καινοτόμα, Αναχωρητική και Αντάρτικη, στάση και συμπεριφορά. Μέσω της τυπολογίας αυτής αποδίδεται μια κοινωνιολογική ερμηνεία στις διάφορες τιμές της διάρκειας σπουδών, η οποία μετρούμενη ποσοτικά έχει ήδη μελετηθεί σε προηγούμενες εργασίες (Kalamatianou 1999, 2003), ως εξής: η Κομφορμιστική φοιτητική στάση και συμπεριφορά αντιστοιχεί σε σύντομη διάρκεια σπουδών που ισοδυναμεί σε αποφοίτηση ακριβώς με το πέρας της ελάχιστης διάρκειας σπουδών όπως αυτή ορίζεται από τη σχετική νομοθεσία. Η Τυπολατρική και η Καινοτόμα φοιτητική στάση και συμπεριφορά αντιστοιχούν σε σχετικά σύντομη διάρκεια σπουδών, που ισοδυναμεί με αποφοίτηση με μικρή καθυστέρηση. Η Αναχωρητική φοιτητική στάση και συμπεριφορά αντιστοιχεί σε παρατεταμένη διάρκεια σπουδών και αποφοίτηση με καθυστέρηση, ενώ τέλος, η Αντάρτικη φοιτητική στάση και συμπεριφορά αντιστοιχεί σε πολύ μακρά διάρκεια σπουδών, η οποία μπορεί να οδηγήσει και σε αιώνια φοίτηση. Ακολούθως, αναπτύσσεται ένα εννοιολογικό μοντέλο μέσω του οποίου συνδέεται η διάρκεια σπουδών (θεωρούμενη ως ποσοτική αλλά και ως ποιοτική μεταβλητή) με συγκεκριμένους παράγοντες, παρατηρούμενους ή λανθάνοντες. Οι παράγοντες αυτοί είτε προϋπάρχουν της εισαγωγής του φοιτητή στο πανεπιστήμιο είτε διαμορφώνονται κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών ως αποτέλεσμα της αλληλεπίδρασης του φοιτητή με το πανεπιστημιακό περιβάλλον. Αναφορικά με την ανάπτυξη του εννοιολογικού μοντέλου αξιοποιήθηκαν, αλλά και επεκτάθηκαν, βασικές υποθέσεις και τεχνικές θεωριών και μοντέλων που προτείνονται στη βιβλιογραφία για τη μελέτη του φαινομένου της εγκατάλειψης ή της παράτασης των σπουδών. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, αξιοποιήθηκαν βασικές υποθέσεις των μοντέλων του Vincent Tinto (1975) και John Bean (1980), καθώς επίσης και τεχνικές του μοντέλου του Alberto Cabrera (1993). Το δεύτερο μέρος της διατριβής περιλαμβάνει τον έλεγχο του εννοιολογικού μοντέλου σε πραγματικά δεδομένα από το Πάντειο Πανεπιστήμιο, με τη βοήθεια τριών στατιστικών μεθόδων: της Ανάλυσης Επιβίωσης, της Διατάξιμης Λογιστικής Παλινδρόμησης και των Μοντέλων Δομικών Εξισώσεων. Η βιβλιογραφία υποδεικνύει ότι οι συγκεκριμένες αυτές στατιστικές μεθοδολογίες έχουν επίσης χρησιμοποιηθεί και σε προηγούμενες μελέτες αλλά μεμονωμένα. Στην παρούσα διατριβή επιλέχθηκε η ταυτόχρονη χρήση τους διότι η κάθε μία εξυπηρετεί συγκεκριμένες ανάγκες της ανάλυσης που αφορούν στο χειρισμό της εξαρτημένης μεταβλητής ως ποσοτικής και ως ποιοτικής μεταβλητής, αλλά και στη δυνατότητα που δίνουν ώστε να συμπεριληφθούν στην ανάλυση παρατηρούμενες και λανθάνουσες ανεξάρτητες μεταβλητές. H Ανάλυση Επιβίωσης και συγκεκριμένα το Μοντέλο Αναλογικού Κινδύνου του Cox επιλέχθηκε διότι επιτρέπει το χειρισμό της διάρκειας σπουδών (εξαρτημένη μεταβλητή) ως ποσοτική μεταβλητή με λογοκριμένες τιμές. Η μέθοδος της Διατάξιμης Λογιστικής Παλινδρόμησης επιλέχθηκε διότι επιτρέπει το χειρισμό της διάρκειας σπουδών ως μια ποιοτική διατάξιμη μεταβλητή, της οποίας εδώ οι τιμές αντιστοιχίζονται με τέσσερις διαφορετικές, αναφορικά με τη διάρκεια σπουδών, ομάδες φοιτητών της τυπολογίας φοιτητικής προσαρμογής. Τέλος, η μέθοδος της Ανάλυσης Λανθανουσών Μεταβλητών και συγκεκριμένα τα Μοντέλα Δομικών Εξισώσεων, επιλέχθηκαν διότι επιτρέπουν τη διερεύνηση παρατηρούμενων αλλά και λανθανουσών παραγόντων (μεταβλητών) που συνδέονται με τη διάρκεια σπουδών, η οποία, ωστόσο, μπορεί να μετρηθεί είτε ποσοτικά, είτε στη βάση δίτιμων μεταβλητών όπου η μία εκ των τιμών εκφράζει, κάθε φορά, έναν από τους πέντε τύπους φοιτητών της τυπολογίας φοιτητικής προσαρμογής. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο εξασφαλίζεται ότι τα αποτελέσματα από την εφαρμογή των τριών μεθόδων είναι μεταξύ τους συμπληρωματικά και τα πληρέστερα δυνατά. Τα κυριότερα αποτελέσματα που προέκυψαν συνοψίζονται στα εξής: η διάρκεια σπουδών επηρεάζεται αφενός από παρατηρούμενους παράγοντες (δημογραφικά χαρακτηριστικά των φοιτητών, ακαδημαϊκά επιτεύγματα πριν την εισαγωγή τους στο πανεπιστήμιο αλλά και κατά τη διάρκεια της φοίτησής) αφετέρου από τέσσερις λανθάνοντες παράγοντες, την Ακαδημαϊκή και Κοινωνική φοιτητική Ενσωμάτωση, το σύστημα Κινήτρων και Προσδοκιών και το σύστημα Εξωγενών Παραγόντων, οι οποίοι φαίνεται να είναι και οι σημαντικότεροι. Συγκεκριμένα, η ενσωμάτωση των φοιτητών στο ακαδημαϊκό και κοινωνικό περιβάλλον του πανεπιστημίου -Ακαδημαϊκή και Κοινωνική φοιτητική ενσωμάτωση-, και στο σύστημα Κινήτρων και Προσδοκιών οδηγεί σε σύντομη ολοκλήρωση των σπουδών. Αντίθετα, περιορισμένη ενσωμάτωση ή έλλειψη ενσωμάτωσης στα προαναφερόμενα συστήματα παραγόντων καθώς και ορισμένοι Εξωγενείς - Αστάθμητοι παράγοντες (οικονομικοί-επαγγελματικοί, οικογενειακοί ή προσωπικοί) που βιώνουν οι φοιτητές κατά τη διάρκεια της φοίτησης οδηγούν σε ολοκλήρωση των σπουδών με καθυστέρηση ή ακόμη και σε αιώνια φοίτηση.
