Aim: To present clinical, biochemical and renal sonographic findings of Medullary Cystic Kidney Disease Type 1 (MCKD1), to discover whether renal transplantation can be considered as an acceptable treatment for MCKD1, the refinement of the critical region for MCKD1 and the identification of the responsible gene. Methods: Genetic linkage analysis, with the use of polymorphic markers spread throughout the critical region, was performed in blood samples of 299 individuals from seven families with MCKD1. Pedigrees were reviewed and updated. Candidate genes were localized and re-sequenced by automatic genetic analyzers. Fifty nine living gene carriers and 33 transplanted patients were studied.
