Breast cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide after lung cancer, the fifth most common cause of cancer death, and the leading cause of cancer death in women. The global burden of breast cancer exceeds all other cancers and the incidence rates of breast cancer are increasing. The major cause of death among breast cancer patients is the development of metastatic lesions at distant sites from the primary tumor, such as the bones, lungs, liver and brain. Much of the classic literarure regarding cancer and integrins has implicated this family of adhesion receptors in tumor cell proliferation, migration and survival. Integrins are heterodimeric cell surface receptors that mediate adhesion to the ECM and immunoglobulin superfamily mole...
