The sanctuaries of the chthonic deities in Ancient Greece

This study is an attempt to redefine the term "chthonic". In this context, the research has focused on determining the conditions required for a sanctuary to be considered as a chthonic one. Within the above mentioned framework, the most prominent ones were identified. To make this possible, reference was made to the sacrifices offered. Based on these, an analysis of the type of altars they were performed on has taken place (Libations-bothroi, burnt offerings-escharai). Moreover, the identity of the buildings containing such altars was established ("megaron", "Telestirion”, “adyton”). Similarly "popular" choices were the theatrical constructions (cultic theatres), as well as the “tholoi”. As for events of mysteric nature, including different levels of initiation, there was a different choice of structures (apsidal buildings).In the analysis of the chthonic ritual, we examined the type of bloody and bloodless offerings, their terminology and the manner in which the devotee addressed to the chthonic Gods (posture, incantations).While studying the symbolism of the findings, extensive reference has been made to the reliefs of nekrodeipnon. We concluded that they essentially constitute representations of symposia held within the sanctuaries. This conclusion was confirmed by the discovery of a large number of sites devoted to the consumption of food (estiatoria).Concerning the artifacts found in sanctuaries, the figurines and the attributes they carry as well as the vessels and sacred objects were thoroughly examined.Among the figurines, busts, probably symbolizing the connection of the depicted God with the underworld were the most outstanding. This interpretation is based on the notion that the busts represent the part of the body displayed in a vertical (upward) motion.Furthermore, we recognized the important role played by water during worship, via the discovery of a large number of urns and phialai in the sanctuaries.In the chapter which examines the Eleusinian Mysteries, the investigation revealed evidence indicative of the increasing importance attributed to the male element.Equally important for the understanding of the Eleusinian cult is the realization of the interchangeability of the roles adopted by the various gods. At the same time not only the "Eleusinian" ownership of the so-called Orphic plates but the overall influence of Orphic ideas in Eleusis was also underlined.Regarding the two stages of the Mysteries, the initiation (myesis) and the epopteia, what primarily distinguishes them is the inability on the one hand and the possibility on the other to see the Gods of the Mysteries. The representation of these “phasmata” with the help of “Daedalic” statues (which have the ability to move) was mainly the result of the pursuit of realism. The expression of this epiphaneia took place with the assistance of a branch of theurgy, called telestic. A peculiar feature of the Dionysiac Mysteries constitutes the ultimate goal to unify the mystes with God.As far as the Kaveirian Mysteries were concerned, we sought for similarities between the Mysteries held in different locations under the same name. The examination revealed that they shared many common characteristics.The analysis was then redirected to public celebrations in Athens. The choice of Athens as "sample”, (case-study) was dictated by the fact that the festive calendar of that city-state is the best well preserved. It was demonstrated that in a large number of festivals the offerings of the first yield of the harvest were intended to increase fertility. At the same time, it was revealed that some festivals, in parallel to the fertility ones, had an intense initiatory character as well. In the last chapter, an effort was made to determine the area of human activity where the presence of chthonic deities was mostly felt.The survey was heavily based on adjectives that the deities constituting the Olympian pantheon took locally. Through the above analysis, it became clear that the influence of chthonic deities in the ancient Greek world can be qualified as anything but unilateral.Η παρούσα μελέτη επιχειρεί ένα επαναπροσδιορισμό του όρου «χθόνιος».Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, η έρευνα επικεντρώθηκε στον καθορισμό των προϋποθέσεων που απαιτούνται προκειμένου να θεωρηθεί ένα ιερό ως χθόνιο, ενώ παράλληλα εντοπίσθηκαν τα κυριότερα εξ αυτών.Για να καταστεί τούτο εφικτό, έγινε εκτεταμένη αναφορά στις προσφερόμενες θυσίες. Βάσει αυτών, αναλύθηκε η τυπολογία των αντίστοιχων βωμών (χοές-βόθροι, ολοκαυτώσεις-εσχάρες). Κατόπιν, ταυτοποιήθηκαν τα κτίσματα τα οποία διέθεταν στο εσωτερικό τους τέτοιου είδους βωμούς («μέγαρα», «τελεστήρια», «άδυτα»). Ομοίως, «δημοφιλείς» επιλογές θεωρήθηκαν τόσο οι θεατρικές κατασκευές όσο και οι θόλοι. Σε μυστηριακές ωστόσο τελετουργίες όπου υφίσταντο διαφορετικές βαθμίδες μυήσεως, εκδηλώθηκε προτίμηση για διαφορετικά οικοδομήματα (αψιδοειδή). Κατά την ανάλυση του χθονίου λατρευτικού τυπικού και της ορολογίας που το περιβάλλει, εξετάσθηκαν το είδος των αιματηρών και αναίμακτων προσφορών, η ονοματολογία τους αλλά και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο απευθύνονταν σε αυτούς οι πιστοί (στάση, επωδές). Στο στάδιο της ερμηνείας των ευρημάτων, έμφαση δόθηκε στα ανάγλυφα νεκρόδειπνων. Διαπιστώθηκε ότι κατ’ ουσίαν αποδίδουν συμπόσια που διεξάγονταν εντός των ιερών, θέση που επιβεβαιώθηκε από την ανακάλυψη μεγάλου αριθμού χώρων εστιάσεως. Στην κατηγορία των κινητών ευρημάτων, συμπεριελήφθησαν τα ειδώλια και τα σύμβολα που φέρουν ως και τα ευρεθέντα αγγεία και ιερά σκεύη Μεταξύ των ειδωλίων, ξεχωρίζουν οι προτομές, συμβολίζουσες πιθανότατα τη σύνδεση του εικονιζόμενου Θεού με τον Κάτω Κόσμο. Η προσέγγιση αυτή ερείδεται στην αντίληψη ότι οι προτομές αποτελούν το απεικονιζόμενο τμήμα ενός σώματος σε κατακόρυφη (ανοδική) κίνηση. Αναδείχθηκε ωσαύτως, ο σημαίνων ρόλος του ύδατος, μέσω της εύρεσης -εντός των ιερών- μεγάλου αριθμού υδριών και φιαλών. Στο κεφάλαιο το οποίο αναφέρεται στα Ελευσίνια Μυστήρια, αποκαλύφθηκαν στοιχεία που δεικνύουν την αύξουσα βαρύτητα στη λατρεία του άρρενος φύλου. Το ίδιο θεμελιώδης για την κατανόηση της Ελευσινιακής λατρείας είναι η συνειδητοποίηση της εναλλαξιμότητας των ρόλων που υιοθετούν οι διάφοροι θεοί. Συναφώς επισημάνθηκε η «Ελευσίνια» χροιά των αποκαλούμενων Ορφικών ελασμάτων (πινακίδων) αλλά και η εν γένει επίδραση των Ορφικών ιδεών στην Ελευσίνα.Σε ό,τι αφορά τα δύο στάδια των Μυστηρίων, τη μύηση και την εποπτεία, εκείνο που κατά κύριο λόγο τα διαχωρίζει, είναι η αδυναμία αφενός και η δυνατότητα αφετέρου του μυουμένου να δει τους Θεούς. Η αναπαράσταση αυτών των «φασμάτων» σε πρακτικό επίπεδο με τη βοήθεια «δαιδαλικών» αγαλμάτων, (που διαθέτουν τη δυνατότητα κίνησης), ήταν απόρροια της επιδίωξης αληθοφάνειας. Η έκφραση αυτής της επιφάνειας λάμβανε χώρα με τη συνδρομή ενός κλάδου της θεουργίας, της τελεστικής. Ιδιάζον χαρακτηριστικό των Μυστηρίων του Διονύσου, αποτελεί ο απώτερος στόχος ένωσης του μύστη με το Θεό. Σε σχέση με τα Καβείρια Μυστήρια αναζητήθηκαν -και διαπιστώθηκαν- ομοιότητες ανάμεσα στα Μυστήρια που τελούνταν σε διαφορετικές τοποθεσίες, υπό την αυτή ονομασία. Αντικείμενο έρευνας απετέλεσαν περαιτέρω οι δημόσιες εορτές της πόλεως-κράτους των Αθηνών. Η επιλογή των Αθηνών ως «δείγματος» (case-study) υπαγορεύθηκε από το γεγονός ότι το εορταστικό της ημερολόγιο είναι το καλύτερα σωζόμενο. Σε μεγάλο αριθμό εορτών καταδείχθηκε ότι οι προσφορές των πρώτων καρπών της σοδειάς είχαν στόχο την αύξηση της γονιμότητας. Επισημάνθηκε ωσαύτως, ότι ορισμένες εορτές διέθεταν παράλληλα με το γονιμικό και έναν έντονο μυητικό χαρακτήρα. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο, κατεβλήθη προσπάθεια προσδιορισμού του χώρου των ανθρώπινων δραστηριοτήτων στις οποίες η συνδρομή των χθονίων θεοτήτων ήταν πλέον έντονη. Η έρευνα βασίσθηκε σε μεγάλο βαθμό στα επίθετα που το δωδεκάθεο του Ολύμπου έφερε τοπικά. Κατέστη σαφές ότι η επιρροή των χθονίων θεοτήτων στον αρχαίο Ελληνικό κόσμο κάθε άλλο παρά ως μονομερής δύναται να χαρακτηρισθεί
