The gifts of reading: reading practices in a crime fiction book club in Athens

The current PhD research is a case study of a gender mixed face-to-face crime fiction book club in Athens. By observing 22 meetings of the reading group and conducting 25 semi-structured interviews with its members, the study aims at developing an understanding of the reading practices of the group as well as its context specific modes of reading and participation, while focusing at the same time on their interrelation with the dimensions of gender and genre. Τhe research is based on a grounded theory methodology for the following reasons: 1) for avoiding the imposition of a pre-existing theoretical framework on the empirical data, 2) for developing theory through a systematic process of coding, 3) for eschewing the “textualization” of the data by applying a “suspicious” reading mode, centered upon the “revelation” or the “exposure” of participants’ unrealized meanings. The findings identify the crime fiction book club as a public circuit of reading and writing exchanges, which can be approached though the “paradigm of the gift”, as introduced by Marcel Mauss. The context specific “gift economy” activated within the crime fiction book club is based on three levels: the collective book choice and the construction of books as material and symbolic objects circulating among group participants, the oral and written exchanges of opinions between members and the construction of regimes of worth, centered upon personhood. The study indicates that exchanges among members are grounded on a series of multiple focalizations on texts, around and outside of them and mobilize a series of local hierarchies (on an educational, reading, generic, writing and communicational level) among members, which can be associated with the dimensions of both gender and the genre of crime fiction.Η παρούσα διατριβή αποτελεί μια μελέτη μεμονωμένης περίπτωσης μιας μικτής (πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο) λέσχης ανάγνωσης αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας στην Αθήνα. Στη βάση της παρατήρησης 22 συναντήσεων της λέσχης και της διεξαγωγής 25 ημι-δομημένων συνεντεύξεων με μέλη της, η έρευνα επιχειρεί να προσεγγίσει τις αναγνωστικές πρακτικές, τους ειδικότερους τρόπους ανάγνωσης και συμμετοχής της αναγνωστικής ομάδας, καθώς και την ιδιαίτερη συσχέτισή τους με τις διαστάσεις του φύλου και του είδους. Η έρευνα ακολουθεί τη μεθοδολογική στρατηγική της θεμελιωμένης θεωρίας (grounded theory) για τους εξής βασικούς λόγους: 1) για να αποφύγει την επιβολή ενός προϋπάρχοντος θεωρητικού πλαισίου στα εμπειρικά δεδομένα, 2) για να αναπτύξει θεωρία μέσα από μια συστηματική διαδικασία κωδικοποίησης, 3) για να αποφύγει την «κειμενοποίηση» των δεδομένων μέσα από την εφαρμογή ενός «καχύποπτου» τρόπου ανάγνωσής τους, οργανωμένου γύρω από την απόπειρα «αποκάλυψης» ή «έκθεσης» υπόρρητων αιτιών και συσχετίσεων, αδιαφανών στα ίδια τα υποκείμενα της έρευνας. Η ανάλυση του εμπειρικού υλικού ανέδειξε τη λέσχη ανάγνωσης αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας ως ένα δημόσιο κύκλωμα (circuit) αναγνωστικών και γραπτών ανταλλαγών, το οποίο μπορεί να προσεγγιστεί μέσα από το «παράδειγμα του δώρου», που εισήγαγε ο Marcel Mauss. Η ιδιότυπη «οικονομία του δώρου» που ενεργοποιείται στη λέσχη αναπτύσσεται στα εξής τρία επίπεδα: στην από κοινού επιλογή των βιβλίων και στη συγκρότησή τους ως υλικών και συμβολικών αντικειμένων που ανταλλάσσονται ανάμεσα στα μέλη, στην ανταλλαγή απόψεων, προφορικών και γραπτών, μεταξύ των συμμετεχόντων/ουσών και στη συγκρότηση αξίας με επίκεντρο τα πρόσωπα. Οι ανταλλαγές που διενεργούνται στη βάση πολύτροπων εστιάσεων πάνω, γύρω και έξω από τα υπό συζήτηση κείμενα, κινητοποιούν μια σειρά τοπικών ιεραρχήσεων (μορφωτικών, αναγνωστικών, ειδολογικών, συγγραφικών, επικοινωνιακών) ανάμεσα στα μέλη, οι οποίες διαμεσολαβούνται τόσο από τη διάσταση του φύλου όσο και από αυτήν του είδους της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας
