The ability of bacterial strains to assimilate glycerol, the main by-product of biodieselproduction facilities, in order to generate higher value compounds of significance for the food andchemical industry, namely 1,3-propanediol (PD), 2,3-butanediol (BD) and ethanol (EtOH), wasassessed during the current thesis. Under this view, 84 bacterial strains were screened for theirability to metabolise crude glycerol, under different fermentation conditions. All but one of thetested strains (Clοstridium butyricum NRRL B-23495), were obtained from various collections ofthe Department of Food Science and Technology of the Agricultural University of Athens and weretested for the first time for their ability to assimilate glycerol.
