Study of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in the atmosphere

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) constitute an important group of bromi-nated flame retardants (BFRs) that have been massively produced and extensively used in numerous everyday products, providing longer escape times in case of fire and thus saving lives, as well as reducing the damage of property Exposure to PBDEs via inhalation has been suggested to be of minor importance in comparison to other exposure routes, such as dietary intake and indoor dust ingestion.The size distribution of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in particle sizes 7.2μm was measured during the cold and the warm period of the year 2013 at a traffic and a background site in the urban agglomeration of Thessaloniki, northern Greece. Mean aggregate concentrations (sum of six particle fractions) of the sum of 12 PBDE congeners (∑12PBDE) were 20.3 and 2.1 pg m-3 at the traffic and the urban background site, respectively, in the cold period exhibiting relative increase (27.1 and 2.4 pg m-3, respectively) in the warm period. At both sampling sites, more than 58% of ∑12PBDE was found to be associated with particles smaller than 0.49 μm in diameter. Also, the size distribution of Polybro-minated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in particle sizes 7.2μm was measured during the warm period of the year 2012 at a rural background site. Mean aggregate concentrations (sum of five particle fractions) of the sum of 12 PBDE congeners (∑12PBDE) was 1.38 pg m-3 and more than 52% of ∑12PBDE was found to be associated with particles smaller than 0.95 μm in diameter.The average outdoor workday inhalation exposure to aggregate concentrations of ∑12PBDE was found to be 136 and 181 pg day-1 at the urban-traffic site in the cold and the warm period, respectively, dropping to 14 and 16 pg day-1 at the urban-background site. The 7.2 μm, κατά τη διάρκεια της ψυχρής και θερμής περιόδου του 2013, στη θέση αστικής κυκλοφορίας και αστικού υποβάθρου του πολεοδομικού συγκροτήματος της Θεσσαλονίκης, στη βόρεια Ελλάδα. Η μέση συνολική συγκέντρωση (άθροισμα των έξι σωματιδιακών κλασμάτων) των 12 μελών PBDE (∑12PBDE) ήταν 20.3 και 2.1 pg m-3 στη θέση αστικής κυκλοφορίας και αστικού υποβάθρου, αντίστοιχα, κατά την ψυχρή περίοδο παρουσιάζοντας σχετική αύξηση (27.1 και 2.4 pg m-3, αντίστοιχα) τη θερμή περίοδο. Στα δυο σημεία δειγματοληψίας, περισσότερο από το 58% του ∑12PBDE βρέθηκε να σχετίζονται με σωματίδια με διάμετρο μικρότερη από 0.49 μm. Επίσης, μετρήθηκε η κατανομή των Πολυβρωμιωμένων Διφαινυλαιθέρων (PBDE) στα σωματιδιακά κλάσματα 7.2μm κατά τη θερμή περίοδο του έτους 2012 στη θέση αγροτικού υποβάθρου. Η μέση συνολική συγκέντρωση (άθροισμα των πέντε σωματιδιακών κλασμάτων) των 12 μελών PBDE (∑12PBDE) ήταν 1.38 pg m-3 και πάνω από 52% του ∑12PBDE βρέθηκε να σχετίζεται με σωματίδια μικρότερα από 0.95 μm σε διάμετρο. Η μέση ημερήσια πρόσληψη PBDEs (∑12PBDE) για εργαζόμενους σε εξωτερικούς χώρους βρέθηκε να είναι 136 και 181 pg day-1 στη θέση αστικής κυκλοφορίας, κατά την ψυχρή και θερμή περίοδο, αντίστοιχα, ενώ στη θέση αστικού υποβάθρου μειώθηκε στα 14 και 16 pg day-1. Το σωματιδιακό κλάσμα <0.49 μm είναι υπεύθυνο για το 68% και το 50% της συνολικής ημερήσιας πρόσληψης PBDEs, στη θέση αστικής κυκλοφορίας και αστικού υποβάθρου, αντίστοιχα, ενώ το σωματιδιακό κλάσμα
