The scholar studying the Minoan-Mycenaean iconography of various cult subjects, regularly comes across a recurrent scene: a seated female figure together with other human or animal figures, depicted in such a way as to suggest the idea of a seated goddess. The seated Minoan and Mycenaean goddess constitutes in this way a characteristic type of anthropomorphic rendering of female deity or deities of the 2nd mill. B.C., a type to which however a special study had not been devoted. The instigation of this dissertation was the discovery of the clay statue of the first enthroned Minoan goddess with upraised arms at Kephala Vasilikis, near Hierapetra (Eastern Crete).
