Tme minoan-mycenaean seated goddess and its durvival in the early historical period

The scholar studying the Minoan-Mycenaean iconography of various cult subjects, regularly comes across a recurrent scene: a seated female figure together with other human or animal figures, depicted in such a way as to suggest the idea of a seated goddess. The seated Minoan and Mycenaean goddess constitutes in this way a characteristic type of anthropomorphic rendering of female deity or deities of the 2nd mill. B.C., a type to which however a special study had not been devoted. The instigation of this dissertation was the discovery of the clay statue of the first enthroned Minoan goddess with upraised arms at Kephala Vasilikis, near Hierapetra (Eastern Crete). This find combines for the first time in a large -scale three-dimensional medium the types of the seated goddess and that of the goddess with upraised arms. With this find, dated to the final Minoan period (LMIIIC) are now set the prerequisites for an overall study of the subject. This find made it clear that it was necessary to study on one hand the preceding period, i.e. the iconography of the Minoan-Mycenaean seated goddess, on the other hand the period immediately following it. This latter having in mind the possibility of a survival of the Minoan-Mycenaean seated goddess in the Early Greek religion of historical times. In this period the early archaic female seated statues form a strong corpus of indications, the role however of the seated divine figure presents in a strange manner -despite the theoretically capital importance of the type and of the idea- many problems and a very scarce documentation. The LMIIIC goddess from Kephala Vasilikis occupies now an intermediate position, bridging a chronologically crucial gap. The in-depth analysis of the iconographical elements attempted in this dissertation, the full and exhaustive co examination of all instances of seated figures, the secondary elements of the images and the new data offered by the Theran frescoes, convince us that from the beginning of the Neopalatial period were formed in Crete iconographical codices around the seated goddess, a clear result of Minoan theological expression. At the beginning of Neopalatial times from the imagery of the seated figure the genre recedes and the male gender almost disappears. The icon therefore of the seated female is selected for the typical rendering of one or more deities. Mycenaean frescoes carry on a plainly Minoan iconographical-theological tradition in the depiction of the seated goddess and the personages (priesthood, worshippers and/or mythical figures) approaching her. A new, Helladic type is added now, expression of popular piety, the small figurines of females enthroned in tripod seats. The discovery of the disiecta membra and the reconstruction on paper of the first large scale statue of an enthroned Minoan goddess with upraised arms at Kephala Vasilikis, revealed a novel phenomenon for 12th c. B.C. Crete; this is however not at all inexplicable, because it is integrated and fully understandable as on the one hand a termination of the already ancient Minoan expression of a seated goddess, on the other hand as an ideal instance of the Minoan-Mycenaean amalgam. The discovery of the statue from Vasiliki in favorable excavational conditions, within a Temple Complex that functioned until the Protogeometric period, offers valuable evidence on the theological and morphological continuation of the seated goddess in the early 1st mill. B.C. The goddess of Vasiliki is conducive to revealing the form and significance of Geometric xoana, and to the doubts whether well-known xoana were seating or standing, a question asked already in antiquity. The heritage of the Minoan-Mycenaean seated goddess in the Geometric period is apparent. Its reappearance in the 8th c. B.C. is due only to an enrichment of the morphological means. The explanation of the decisive, if not exclusive focusing on the sculptural image of the seated goddess in Crete c. 700 B.C., is enriched now with the argumentation on the developments that were taking place in the island throughout the Dark Ages and the Geometric times.Ο μελετητής της κρητομυκηναϊκής εικονογραφίας συναντά μεταξύ των διαφόρων λατρευτικών παραστάσεων μία τακτικά επαναλαμβανόμενη σκηνή: μία γυναικεία μορφή καθήμενη, συνυπάρχουσα με άλλες μορφές ανθρώπων ή ζώων με τρόπο τέτοιον ώστε να υποβάλει την ιδέα καθημένης θεάς. Η καθήμενη μινωική και μυκηναϊκή θεά συνιστά με τον τρόπο αυτό έναν χαρακτηριστικό τύπο ανθρωπομορφικής απόδοσης της γυναικείας θεότητας ή θεοτήτων της κρητομυκηναϊκής 2ης π.Χ. χιλιετίας, το οποίο όμως δεν είχε αποτελέσει έως τώρα θέμα ειδικής μελέτης. Αφορμή της παρούσας διατριβής παρέσχε η εύρεση του πρωτοφανούς αγαλματίου της πρώτης ένθρονης μινωικής θεάς μεθ΄ υψωμένων χειρών από το ναϊκό συγκρότημα των "Σκοτεινών Αιώνων" στην Κεφάλα Βασιλικής Ιεράπετρας (ανατολική Κρήτη), εύρημα που συνδυάζει για πρώτη φορά σε πλαστικό μέσον και σε μεγάλη κλίμακα τους τύπους της καθημένης θεάς και της θεάς μεθ' υψωμένων χειρών. Με το εύρημα αυτό, χρονολογούμενο στην ύστατη μινωική περίοδο (ΥΜΙΙΙΓ), τίθενται πλέον οι προϋποθέσεις γενικής μελέτης του θέματος. Δι' αυτού κατέστη απολύτως σαφές ότι είναι απαραίτητη η έρευνα τόσο της προτέρας αυτού περιόδου, η εξέταση δηλαδή του θέματος της καθημένης θεάς της Εποχής του Χαλκού στο Αιγαίο, όσο και της αμέσως μεταγενέστερης αυτού περιόδου. Και αυτό έχοντας κατά νου την πιθανή επιβίωση της εν λόγω μορφής στην "πρώιμη ελληνική" θρησκεία των ιστορικών χρόνων, κατά τους οποίους ναι μεν τα πρώιμα αρχαϊκά λίθινα αγάλματα αποτελούν ισχυρό σώμα ενδείξεων, η θέση όμως των καθημένων θείων εικόνων, παρά την θεωρητικά πρωτεύουσα σημασία του τύπου και της ιδέας, παρουσιάζει ακόμη, κατά ίσως αρκετά παράδοξο τρόπο, πολλά προβλήματα και ελλιπέστατη τεκμηρίωση. Η ΥΜΙΙΙΓ θεά της Κεφάλας Βασιλικής λαμβάνει τώρα καίρια ενδιάμεση θέση, καλύπτοντας ένα κρίσιμο χρονικά κενό. Η εμβάθυνση στα εικονογραφικά στοιχεία η επιχειρούμενη στην παρούσα εργασία, η πλήρης και αναλυτική συνεξέταση όλων των περιπτώσεων καθημένων μορφών, τα δευτερεύοντα στοιχεία της παράστασης καθώς και τα νέα πλούσια δεδομένα των θηραϊκών τοιχογραφιών, πείθουν ότι από την έναρξη της νεοανακτορικής σχηματίστηκαν στην Κρήτη εικονογραφικοί κώδικες περί την καθήμενη γυναίκα ως θεά, καθαρό προϊόν της μινωικής θεολογικής έκφρασης. Με την αρχή της νεοανακτορικής από το σχήμα του καθημένου υποχωρεί η ρωπογραφία και σχεδόν εξοστρακίζεται το ανδρικό φύλο. Επιλέγεται επομένως η εικόνα της καθημένης θηλείας για την τυπική έκφραση μίας ή περισσοτέρων θεαινών. Οι μυκηναϊκές τοιχογραφίες συνεχίζουν καθαρή μινωική εικονογραφική-θεολογική παράδοση στην έκφραση της καθημένης θεάς και του προσερχόμενου προς αυτήν ιερατείου, λατρευτών ή μυθικών μορφών. Προστίθεται τώρα ένας νέος, ελλαδικός τύπος, έκφραση της λαϊκής θρησκευτικότητας, το πλήθος των ενθρόνων σε τριποδικά καθίσματα μικρών γυναικείων ειδωλίων. Η εύρεση των κατακερματισμένων μελών και η σχεδιαστική ανασύνθεση του πρώτου μεγάλης κλίμακας αγαλματίου ένθρονης θεάς μεθ' υψωμένων χειρών στην Βασιλική Ιεράπετρας, αποκάλυψε ένα καινοφανές φαινόμενο στην Κρήτη του 12ου π.Χ. αι., καθόλου όμως δυσεξήγητο, διότι εντάσσεται και γίνεται πλήρως κατανοητό ως αφενός κατάληξη της ήδη αρχαίας τότε μινωικής έκφρασης της καθημένης θεάς, αφετέρου ιδανική σχεδόν έκφραση του κρητομυκηναϊκού αμαλγάματος. Η εύρεση του αγαλματίου της Βασιλικής σε ευνοϊκές ανασκαφικές συνθήκες, εντός ενός ναϊκού συγκροτήματος το οποίο λειτούργησε έως την πρωτογεωμετρική περίοδο, παρέχει πολύτιμα στοιχεία για τη θεολογική και μορφολογική περί την καθήμενη θεά συνέχεια από τον 11ο έως τον 8ο π.Χ. αι. Η θεά της Βασιλικής συμβάλλει και στην αποκάλυψη της μορφής και σημασίας των γεωμετρικών ξοάνων και στο πρόβλημα αμφιβολίας αν κάθηντο ή ίσταντο γνωστά από πηγές ξόανα, τα οποία αποτελούσαν ερμηνευτικά προβλήματα ήδη από την αρχαιότητα. Σαφής αποκαλύπτεται τώρα η κληρονομιά της κρητομυκηναϊκής καθημένης τη γεωμετρική εποχή. Η επανεμφάνισή της τον 8ο π.Χ. αι. οφείλεται μόνον στον πλουτισμό των κοροπλαστικών μέσων την περίοδο αυτή. Η εξήγηση της αποφασιστικής, αν όχι αποκλειστικής, μορφολογικής συγκέντρωσης περί την καθήμενη θεά στην Κρήτη από το 700 π.Χ., πλουτίζεται τώρα με την προβληματική εξελίξεων που λάμβαναν χώρα στη νήσο καθ΄όλη την περίοδο των Σκοτεινών και Γεωμετρικών Αιώνων
